that will hold more books and will meet earthquake codes. The project will expand the library's capacity by 15,000 to 16,000 volumes.

``This is the first time the main library has had a face lift since it opened in 1977,'' said city librarian Lin Storsteen.

Plans call for the library to reopen in late January. Books being checked out now will not have to be returned to the library until February.

The city's youth library a block away will be open and the city plans to have book drop-off boxes outside the main library during the time it is closed.

The remodeling project also includes converting the former children's story area into a local history room, featuring a collection of books, maps and photographs from longtime Palmdale resident Fred Strasburg. The collection includes 200 maps, 250 to 300 books and 150 photographs.

The history room also will feature the stained glass windows Stained Glass Windows was an early broadcast television program, broadcast on early Sunday evenings on the ABC network. The program was a religious broadcast, hosted by the Reverend Everett Parker.

The program ran from September 26, 1948 until October 16, 1949.
