HISTORY: The history of The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle
campaign dates back to 1891. That year, San Francisco
Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee placed a pot at the
Oakland ferry landing, encouraging passengers to toss in
their spare change. Captain McFee used the money he
collected to give the hungry a free Christmas dinner.
Today, we continue that tradition by using kettle
donations to serve homeless and low-income families not
just during Christmas, but year-round as well.
