WHAT: National Hunger Awareness Day is June 3rd. It's time to
make sure the residents of eastern Massachusetts are aware
of the issue of hunger, and how they can get involved to
help The Greater Boston Food Bank work to solve the
problem. Hunger is a silent epidemic. 173,000 kids in the
greater Boston area are at risk of going to bed hungry.
They literally cannot rely on a full plate at mealtime,
particularly during the summer when they don't have access
to school breakfast or lunch.
To help raise awareness about the issue of summertime
hunger, The Greater Boston Food Bank will be hosting
several events to commemorate National Hunger Awareness
Day.
HIGHLIGHTS: -- Hunger Forum: The Greater Boston Food Bank and The
Boston Foundation will host a Hunger Forum starting at
8:30 a.m. on Friday, June 4, at The Boston Foundation
offices at 75 Arlington Street. Pulitzer Prize winning
author, David Shipler, will keynote the event. Shipler
recently published a book entitled The Working Poor:
Invisible in America. Catherine D'Amato, The Greater
Boston Food Bank's President and CEO will moderate a
panel of local experts on our community's working

-- Opening of Boston Stock Exchange: Catherine D'Amato,
President and CEO of The Greater Boston Food Bank will
join Kenneth Leibler, Chairman of the Boston Stock
Exchange at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 3rd to ring
the opening bell in Boston. Bell ringing ceremonies
will be held in stock exchanges across the U.S. as a
part of a national call for hunger awareness. Traders
will be donating their lunch money, to help support
the efforts of The Food Bank.
-- Volunteer Food Sorting Competitions: Beginning on
Tuesday, June 1st and running through Friday, June 4th
employees from several area businesses including
Health Advances, Horizon Management, Boston Works,
Fidelity, Sovereign Bank, State Street,
Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Tufts Health Plan, Blue Cross
Blue Shield, John Hancock Life, Boston Cares, Cirelli
Foods and Whole Foods will participate in a food
sorting competition. The competition will take place
at The Greater Boston Food Bank's warehouse located at
99 Atkinson Street in Boston between 12:30 p.m. - 9:00
p.m.
-- Special Guest: On Thursday, June 3rd, Lieutenant
Governor Kerry Healy will participate in the
competition assisting employees from Tufts Health Plan
and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Photo opportunity will
take place between 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
