MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 2002

Josu Bergara Etxebarria, Prime Minister of the Basque Province of Bizkaia, will personally kick off promotional efforts to attract visitors to the province with a sparkling VIP celebration on April 10, at the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. Bizkaia is situated in the north of the Iberian Peninsula Iberian Peninsula, c.230,400 sq mi (596,740 sq km), SW Europe, separated from the rest of Europe by the Pyrenees. Comprising Spain and Portugal, it is washed on the N and W by the Atlantic Ocean and on the S and E by the Mediterranean Sea; the Strait of Gibraltar , along the Bay of Bizkaia and bordering on France in the northeast.

The event will offer guests typical Basque cuisine Basque cuisine refers to the typical dishes and ingredients of the cuisine of the Basque people of Spain and France. Bizkaia, virtually undiscovered by U.S. visitors, has a rugged terrain -- and history! -- for adventurers, top hotels, museums and coastal resort towns for the upscale traveler, and a capital that is recently shining in the limelight with some of the most important modern architectural contributions in the entire world. Among them are the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a modern and contemporary art museum designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry and located in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. It is built alongside the Nervion River, which runs through the city of Bilbao to the Atlantic Coast.  and the upcoming urban Abandoibarra project, by architect Cesar Pelli, which will revitalize Bilbao's industrial areas. Pelli was selected for a similar project in Miami, with the construction of the new cultural arts complex on Biscayne Boulevard.

Bizkaia officials chose Miami as the location for the kick-off event because of the province's centuries-old historical ties to South Florida. Scholars believe it was a Biscayan sailor, who was shipwrecked on the Florida coast and lived with a native Indian tribe INDIAN TRIBE. A separate and distinct community or body of the aboriginal Indian race of men found in the United States.

Prime Minister Bergara is scheduled to be in Miami for three days, where he is expected to tour Miami and meet with Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas and Miccosukee Tribe Chairman Billy Cypress. The prime minister will bestow both leaders with the honor of the makila, a symbolic swordstick swordstick

Some historic individuals, who have received the honor include Winston Churchill, General Charles de Gaulle, Prince Rainier of Monaco, Queen Wilhelmina of Holland and Popes Pio and John Paul II John Paul II, 1920–2005, pope (1978–2005), a Pole (b. Note to the Press: A press conference to officially launch efforts to promote the Province of Bizkaia and featuring Prime Minister Josu Bergara Etxebarria, in addition to several authorities on Basque culture, cuisine and architecture, will take place Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at 1pm, at the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, 3251 South Miami Avenue.
