REMEMBERING THE HOLOCAUST : AREA EVENTS TO HONOR VICTIMS, SURVIVORS OF NAZI PERSECUTION.

Yom HaShoah Yom HaShoah (Yom HaZikaron laShoah Ve'laGvura) (יום השואה , יום הזיכרון לשואה ולגבורה), translated , the Holocaust Remembrance, will be observed with music, poetry and candle lighting over the next weeks as synagogues and churches take time to recall the systematic destruction of more than 6 million European Jews by Nazi Germany before and during World War II.

Yom HaShoah takes place at the beginning of May following Passover.

Here are some of the programs taking place at area churches and synagogues as well as at other locations:

Temple Ramat Zion, 17655 Devonshire St., Northridge, will present ``Voices of the Generations,'' a story of one family's Holocaust experiences followed by its annual Yom HaShoah service and program at 8 p.m. today. For further information, call (818) 360-1881.

Tonight, the congregants of Temple Beth Haverim, 5126 Clareton Drive, Suite 140, Agoura Hills, will join millions of Jews nationwide in the lighting of Yom HaShoah yellow candles in their homes.

The yellow signifies the yellow stars Jews were forced to wear in Nazi-occupied Europe. The flame symbolizes hope and tolerance.

On Sunday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., a special service titled, ``A Holocaust Memorial Day Holocaust Memorial Day may refer to one of several commemorations of the Holocaust.
  • Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, is a secular Jewish holiday observed on 27 Nisan.
 Observance'' will be conducted at the temple. Erika Jacoby, a guest speaker, will share her experiences as a teen-ager in Auschwitz. For further information, call (818) 991-7111.

The choirs from Kirk o' the Valley Presbyterian Church of Reseda, the American Lutheran Church The American Lutheran Church (ALC) was a Christian Protestant denomination in the United States that existed from 1960 to 1987. Its headquarters were in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Upon its formation in 1960, the ALC designated Augsburg Publishing House (est.  of Burbank and the Valley Outreach Synagogue of Reseda will perform Sunday in remembrance of the Holocaust victims While victims of the Holocaust were primarily Jews, the Nazis also persecuted and often killed millions of members of other groups they considered inferior, undesirable or dangerous. .

The Kirk o' the Valley and American Lutheran choirs will perform at the American Lutheran Church at 4:30 p.m. at 755 N. Whitnall Highway, Burbank; and at 7:30 p.m. the Valley Outreach Synagogue choir will join the two others in a performance at Kirk o' the Valley Presbyterian Church, 19620 Vanowen St. Further information is available at (818) 345-2535.

Jewish Family Services of Los Angeles will hold a Holocaust Memorial Commemoration at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, Zakheim Section, 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles.
