The Cougars (0-1) were fortunate several other potential interceptions were dropped by the Dons (1-0). COC had to wait until its third possession to produce its first first down.

``We just never got off today,'' said COC coach Chuck Lyon, whose team averaged 40 points a game last season and had previously not scored fewer than 14 points. ``We were never in a rhythm.''

COC starting quarterback Jason Winn and Santa Ana quarterback Kelly Coburn struggled early to connect with their receivers.

The Dons countered with a solid running game - 171 yards, led by 137 on 19 carries by Brandon Fischer - and took the lead for good with two touchdowns in the second quarter.

The Cougars thought they had cut the lead in half on a 62-yard run by J.J. Arrington with 6:41 remaining in the first half, but the touchdown was called back because of a holding penalty.

COC didn't get another chance to come close to scoring until the fourth quarter. The Cougars had first-and-goal but never got closer than the 2 as freshman reserve Kyle <noinclude></noinclude>
