From 9 a.m. today until 9 a.m. Sunday, relay teams averaging nine to 15 people each will circle the track, with the only halt a brief memorial ceremony this evening for people killed by cancer.

``We have individuals that want a cure for cancer - they may have lost a friend to cancer or they may have a survivor they want to honor - and various business and community groups are all taking part,'' said Barbara Gillon, community service coordinator for the cancer society's High Desert unit.

A ``survivors lap'' starts the relay at 8:45 a.m. today. After dark tonight, luminaries - candles in paper sacks - will be put in the stands in memory of people who have lost their battles with cancer.

``If you've never gone, well, it's a very moving experience,'' Gillon said of the ceremony. ``It's hard to find a dry eye in the stadium.''
