RELAY FOR LIFE NAMES CHAIRWOMEN VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT.

Three co-chairwomen with more than a decade of combined service with the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life Relay For Life (often shortened to Relay) is a fundraising event of the American Cancer Society, and is now held in many other countries. It is an overnight event designed to spread awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures, celebrate survivorship and raise money  have been named to organize this year's relay, taking place June 25-26 at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. .

Laura Scott will oversee team and fund-raising development; Cheri Fleming will oversee event growth and community development; and Julie Young is in charge of actual event production development.

Working with a team of committee heads and volunteers, the trio hope to raise $550,000 at this year's relay to support the American Cancer Society's programs of research, patient services and education.

As Team Growth co-chairwoman, Scott will focus on recruiting new relay teams, bringing back teams from previous relay events, and mentoring team captains. She will also help coordinate online registration for teams and walkers.

Scott is a cancer survivor who co-facilitates Bosom Buddies Bosom Buddies is an American sitcom starring Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari created by Robert L. Boyett, Thomas L. Miller and Chris Thompson. It ran from 1980 to 1982 on ABC. , a group for breast-cancer patients and survivors, and has been involved with the relay since 2001.

``People gave me so much help in the beginning through support groups, it was my idea to get involved as a way of giving back,'' Scott said. ``The more I became involved, the more I wanted to keep on giving and giving.''

Fleming has been a relay participant for several years and had organized teams for previous relays when she joined the local planning committee planning committee n (in local government) → comité m de planificación  as co-chairwoman in 2004.

She will focus on adding corporate development programs to the sponsorship packages for the 2005 relay, and will also lead the committee responsible for recruiting cancer survivors Cancer survivors are those individuals with cancer of any type, current or past, who are still living. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) pioneered the definition of survivor as from the time of diagnosis and for the balance of life, a person diagnosed with  who want to participate.

Young has been involved with the relay for four years and served as logistics chairwoman for the past two years. In her new position as co- chairwoman, she will continue to work with logistics as well as ceremonies, entertainment, games, Kids Kamp, day-of-event registration, food and the Relay Store.

``I relay because I believe there is a cure for cancer on the horizon,'' Young said. ``We need to do everything we can to reach that goal.''

 heads are already working on this year's relay, but the committee is still seeking leaders for Team Retention and Mentoring, Registration, Data Collection, Accounting, Event Development, Closing Ceremony, Luminary Ceremony, Kids Kamp, food and Volunteers. Subcommittee members are also being sought to work with survivors, poster and flier distribution, and additional public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment.
