RELAY FOR LIFE FUNDRAISER SATURDAY.Byline: Daily News SAUGUS -- Thousands of cancer survivors Cancer survivors are those individuals with cancer of any type, current or past, who are still living. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) pioneered the definition of survivor as from the time of diagnosis and for the balance of life, a person diagnosed with and their supporters will gather this weekend in Central Park for a 24-hour rally to raise money to battle the disease while celebrating life and remembering those lost. Relay for Life Relay For Life (often shortened to Relay) is a fundraising event of the American Cancer Society, and is now held in many other countries. It is an overnight event designed to spread awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures, celebrate survivorship and raise money will start at 9a.m. Saturday with teams of walkers rounding the sprawling park. A candlelight ceremony will be held in the evening to remember cancer victims and honor survivors and caregivers. Teams include co-workers, club members, families and friends who have gathered donations prior to the event. Those who have survived cancer will participate in the first lap, followed by a team lap with banners, costumes and theme decorations. The relay is expected to draw more than 1,000 walkers on 100 teams and raise $500,000 to support cancer research, education and patient services.
