RELATING FACULTY-STUDENT HUMAN RELATIONSHIP AND STUDENTS' SCHOLASTIC PERFORMANCE A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATIONThis study investigated the faculty-student human relationship of the faculty and students of the College of Education (COEd)of the Palompon Institute of Technology, Palompon, Leyte, Philippines. The main purpose of which was to determine whether relationship exists between faculty-student human relationship and the students' scholastic performance. The investigation was guided by the following questions: a) What is the level of the human relationship between the teacher education faculty and their respective students? b) What is the scholastic performance of the teacher-education students? c) Is the faculty-student human relationship significantly related with the students' scholastic performance? On the basis of the preceding questions, the researcher formulated the hypothesis that, "faculty-student human relationship is significantly related with the students' scholastic performance", tested at 0.05 level of significance. Methods The study made use of the descriptive-correlational method of research, which utilized a simple random sampling technique in obtaining the desired sample, taken from a population which consisted of students handled by the teacher-education faculty. The student sample rated the human relationship of their respective instructors/teachers using the 20-item faculty-student human relationship questionnaire - a five-point Likert type rating scale. The means, standard deviations, correlation coefficient and the t-test for the significance of r were the statistics used in the analysis. Findings Findings revealed that the faculty-student human relationship and students' scholastic performance among the faculty and students were both found very satisfactory (82.49 and 3.58 respectively); The correlation coefficient (r)value between the faculty-student human relationship and the scholastic performance was only 0.25, indicating a low positive correlation, which implies that no significant relationship existed between the faculty-student human relationship and students' scholastic performance. Recommendations: Good human relations among faculty and students should never be disregarded, instead, it should always be considered by every teacher as a very important ingredient in the teaching-learning process. As far as the College of Education is concerned, though faculty human relations may not have been found as a factor to affect students' scholastic performance yet, it should be noted that, it is one of the most important qualities that a teacher should possess. A similar study including other Colleges as respondents, including more variables is suggested to strengthen the result. Limitations of the study The study was limited only to teacher-education faculty and students, consisting of small sample size (26 COEd instructors and 260 students). The analysis was limited only to getting the relationship of the two variables- faculty-student human relationship and scholastic performance. The Author: |
