REISER'S `MAD' THEME SONG GOES INTERPLANETARY : HIM AGAIN.Byline: Marilyn Beck & Stacy Jenel Smith Paul Reiser's ``totally bewildered and tickled'' over the fact that his ``Mad About You'' theme song has made its way to Mars. The tune was transmitted by NASA NASA: see National Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA in full National Aeronautics and Space Administration Independent U.S. scientists this week to ``wake up'' the little Sojourner rover that landed on the red planet aboard the Pathfinder lander. ``At first I didn't understand. ... There's no astronaut, who needs to be awakened?'' Reiser recalls. Paul, of course, wrote the song, and he says, ``When you're writing a song, you never think, `Boy, this'll sound great on Mars!' The only downside could be if they discovered life on Mars Scientists have long speculated about the possibility of life on Mars owing to the planet's proximity and similarity to Earth. It remains an open question whether life exists on Mars now, or existed there in the past. by someone coming around the corner saying, `Turn that down, we're trying to sleep here.' '' Reiser tells us he can't imagine why his song was chosen for its mission. Lyrics, maybe? ``I don't have an answer. I don't have a clue. Let me hit this button and see what it will do. Those were the original words,'' he claims. But seriously, he wonders, ``Was it some NASA guy digging the album, saying, `I'll use this because it makes me want to dance?' I'd love to know.'' Howdy boys An Aug. 15 start date has been set for Bruce Willis' ``Armageddon'' - which industry wags already are calling ``Die Hard'' on an ``Asteroid asteroid, planetoid, or minor planet, small body orbiting the sun. More than 10,000 asteroids have orbits sufficiently well known to have been cataloged and named; thousands more exist. .'' Small wonder. The Disney pic, with Jerry Bruckheimer (``Top Gun'') and Gale Anne Hurd (``Terminator 2'') producing, has a Texas-sized asteroid hurtling toward Earth. Luckily, we have Bruce - the world's foremost oil driller in this movie - and his tough-guy drilling crew. They are able, and, more importantly, willing, to be shot out into space, where they'll connect with the asteroid and blow up the sucker before it kills us all. It's in the genes Simon Townshend, younger brother of the legendary Pete Townshend, has just closed a record deal with Rising Records for the Simon Townshend Band (STB See set-top box. STB - set-top box ). The group's label debut, ``Among Us,'' featuring Simon's 18-year-old son, Ben, will be released Sept. 2. Meanwhile, Simon hits the road in a couple of weeks as backing vocalist and lead guitarist with the Who on the much-anticipated ``Quadrophenia'' tour. He also plays the role of the bus driver in the rock opera that kicks off July 19. Not sitting at home making spaghetti You might remember that the Mafia got wiped out recently in a CBS miniseries. So what's the network going to do now? ``Bella Mafia,'' another miniseries, this one with the widows of a bunch of slain mob guys vowing blood for blood in what's described as a ``sweeping tale of vengeance.'' What's next? A Saturday morning series about Mafia kids? Just kidding. Celebrated ``Prime Suspect'' creator Linda LaPlante is behind ``Bella Mafia,'' which makes it exciting even before the casting of Sophia, Teresa, Rosa and the rest of their famiglia.
