Seles, also seeded No. 1, swept Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina 6-3, 6-3. And the Fernandezes, who are not related, beat Nathalie Tauziat and Mary Pierce of France 6-4, 6-3.

WEIGHTLIFTING

Petrov takes gold: Two months after his lifetime ban from the sport was lifted following an ex-girlfriend's confession, weightlifter Aleksey Petrov of Russia is an Olympic gold medalist. Petrov totalled 887-1/4 pounds in the snatch and clean-and-jerk to win the 200-1/2-pound competition.
