Monday is the deadline to register to vote in California's historic recall election - if it goes on as scheduled on Oct. 7 - and the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's Office will be open today and Sunday to handle last-minute applications.

 the election, county officials encouraged residents to register to vote anyway.

``I think the important thing everyone understands is the election, at this time, is still scheduled,'' said Kristin Heffron, chief deputy registrar-recorder.

``It's better to register early than to miss it altogether.''

Monday's voter registration Voter registration is the requirement in some democracies for citizens to check in with some central registry before being allowed to vote in elections. An effort to get people to register is known as a voter registration drive. Centralized/compulsory vs.  deadline comes after county election offices saw skyrocketing levels of voter interest in recent weeks.

The county office will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Sunday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday. Registration forms and a drop-off box will be available in the front lobby until midnight Monday.

The deadline for requesting absentee ballots is Sept. 30.

Heffron added that some residents have called requesting second absentee ballots, after having discarded dis·card

She encouraged voters to turn in their absentee ballots, if they've decided on the issues.

``I think people are just holding off. They're waiting to see what's happening with the courts,'' Heffron said. ``If they've made up their minds, just go ahead and vote and send it back in.''
