A book or treatise on mineralogy. from a university in Sonora, Mexico, was searching for cattle in what would become Placerita Canyon. Legend has it Lopez fell asleep under an old oak tree and dreamed about gold. When he woke up, he dug up wild onions and found gold clinging to the roots of the onion. The oak tree became known as the Oak of the Golden Dream. At the time, the area still belonged to Mexico and the discovery set off a minor gold rush mostly consisting of miners from Sonora. The virus is a flavivirus and is related to a number of viruses that cause encephalitis. LANCASTER -- A sparrow found dead Aug. 10 in Lancaster has been confirmed as the Antelope Valley's first bird death this year from West Nile virus. A resident found the bird near Avenue L and 15th Street West and reported it over the state's telephone hotline for the virus, which is spread by mosquitoes that bite infected birds. Since the virus first turned up in the Antelope Valley in 2003, it has sickened and killed birds and horses, but so far no people, officials said. The robbery occurred about 2:20 a.m. Sunday at the Arco station at 706 E. Los Angeles Ave. A man described as a Latino between 20 and 23 years old ordered the clerk to open the cash register. The clerk complied and the robber then left, police said. Nobody was injured. The man's face was covered with a black bandanna and he was wearing a black ball cap, a brown plaid shirt and dark pants.
