Man denies guilt in molestations

LANCASTER -- A 21-year-old man accused of confronting 10 girls on two elementary school elementary school: see school.  campuses in August pleaded notguilty Tuesday to 10 felony and misdemeanor counts.

Andrew Zach Ortega of Lancaster is charged with three counts of committing a lewd act on a child, two counts of attempted lewd acts on a child and one count of an attempted forcible lewd act on a child, all felonies. He also is charged with four misdemeanor counts of child molesting.

Authorities said Ortega approached two girls on the campus of Sierra Elementary about 7:30 a.m. Aug. 23 and asked them questions, then ran away.

He then allegedly went to a second Lancaster school, Mariposa Elementary, the same day and molested mo·lest

Five days later, authorities said, Ortega allegedly went back to Sierra Elementary and fondled a 7-year-old girl's chest and genitals and touched two other students in the same manner.

Ortega, who lives and works within a mile of Sierra Elementary, was arrested Aug. 30 at work.

Live-in boyfriend jailed in shooting

 was jailed Tuesday without bail for trying to kill his 27-year-old live-in girlfriend, and a second man was held on suspicion of being an accomplice to the shooting, sheriff's officials said.

Sheriff's deputies were called about 11 p.m. Monday to 53rd Street West and Avenue H, where the woman had been shot several times. She was hospitalized but was expected to survive.

Francisco Valdez, 26, of Littlerock was detained at the scene and later booked on suspicion of being an accessory to attempted murder In the criminal law, attempted murder is committed when the defendant does an act that is more than merely preparatory to the commission of the crime of murder and, at the time of these acts, the person has a specific intention to kill. , with bail set at $500,000.

Deputies contacted David Herrera, 24, of Canoga Park after learning he and the victim had been living together, and they found evidence that linked him to the shooting, officials said.

Trustees to vote on school tax

CANYON COUNTRY -- The Sulphur Springs School District The Sulphur Springs School District is a school district in the Santa Clarita Valley that serves portions of the Canyon Country and Newhall communities within the city of Santa Clarita, California. As of March 26, 2006, it has 8 elementary schools.  board will vote tonight on a special property tax district for new development in the Golden Valley area to fund a new elementary campus.

Pardee Homes fronted the money for Golden Oak School, which will open in August. If the school board approves the move, which is likely, homebuyers in the Pardee development will repay the costs through a Mello-Roos tax district.

The amount of the assessment is based on the assessed value and the size of each house, Superintendent Robert Nolet said. The goal is more than $24 million.

The board will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the district office, 17866 Sierra Highway Canyon Country.
