Girl, 14, on mend in beating, rape

PALMDALE -- A 14-year-old girl was recovering Friday after being beaten and raped at an elementary school elementary school: see school.  campus, officials said.

The unidentified girl was found unconscious about 12:40 a.m. Thursday at Cimarron School, in the 36000 block of 45th Street East, after a neighbor reported hearing screams.

The incident had no connection to the school, officials said.

A wildlife biologist is someone who studies wild animals and their habitats.
 and environmental consultant Richard Montijo will speak at 4 p.m. today at the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve, 35th Street West and Avenue K-8.

Montijo will speak about migratory birds that visit the Antelope Valley and will give a slide show to help identify the birds.

The event is free and designed for people of all ages.

POW/MIA POW/MIA Prisoner Of War/Missing In Action  event to be planned

PALMDALE -- The Antelope Valley Service Organization Association will meet at 5 p.m. Monday at the Palmdale Senior Center, 1002 E. Ave. Q-12.

The group will discuss planning of the POW/MIA Remembrance event, scheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 15 at McAdam Park, and the Veterans Day celebration set for 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at Desert Lawn Memorial Park.

Volunteers asked for river cleanup

The city will hold its annual River Rally on Sept. 15, with volunteers needed to help clean up the Santa Clara River Santa Clara River may refer to:

Scout troops, club and individuals will meet from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Canyon View Drive and Calla calla or calla lily: see arum.

Either of two distinct kinds of plants of the arum family. Calla palustris is known as the arum lily, water arum, or wild calla.
 Way to clean up the dry river, touted as Southern California's last wild waterway. Organizers will provide gloves, trash bags and snacks.

An Environmental Expo will be held in conjunction with the rally and offer tips on recycling, pollution prevention, water quality, wilderness preservation and wildlife conservation.

Back-in parking plan on agenda

NEWHALL -- Downtown Newhall's controversial new back-in parking along San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  will be discussed Monday night at a meeting of Santa Clarita's Newhall Redevelopment Committee.

Members will review input from a public meeting with consultants who are helping shape the redevelopment. Critics complain it is awkward to back into slanted parking places on the street.

The committee will meet at 7 p.m. in the Century Conference Room in City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd.
