Killer sentenced to life in prison

A jury on Friday found that a Lancaster ex-convict convicted of robbing and killing an antique-shop owner and an elderly man three months apart in 2003 in Littlerock should be spared the death penalty.

A Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Superior Court jury decided Ernest Scott, 28, should be sentenced to life in prison without parole for murdering Charles Trice, 76, and Victoria Gnerlich, 46.

Sentencing is set for Sept. 5.

Homeless woman victim of assault

LANCASTER -- A 56-year-old homeless woman was sexually assaulted early Friday in an underground tunnel where she and several other transients live near Avenue K and the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley. , sheriff's deputies said.

The victim was sleeping on her mattress when she was awakened by a 300-pound man pulling off her pants. The victim told deputies that the man was covered in blood and appeared to be bleeding from both wrists.

The man was described as African-American between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-9, weighing 280-300 pounds and wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants.

New expansion plan unveiled

A revised version of Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital's controversial expansion made public Friday could lessen some impacts on the surrounding neighborhood.

The hospital is seeking the city's approval for the plan, which details how the facility could serve a fast-growing population over the next 20 years.

One medical building planned on the campus's outer edge has been moved closer to its core and away from homes. An underground parking garage would be built near the main entrance and a street realignment re·a·lign
