Transmission line in forest gets OK

The U.S. Forest Service will allow a new power transmission line to be built in forest-owned land near Santa Clarita to help meet the growing demand for electricity in the burgeoning north Los Angeles County region.

Some 13 miles of Southern California Edison's proposed 25.6-mile line between its Antelope Valley and Pardee substations would replace an existing power line in the Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los .

The Forest Service last week granted Edison permission to operate the high-voltage line for 50 years. Tower supports would be taller than the existing towers but the units would be placed at midslope to lessen the impact on the viewshed and maximize firefighting efforts.

The project would also transport wind energy to the Los Angeles Basin The Los Angeles Basin is the coastal sediment-filled plain located between the peninsular and transverse ranges in southern California in the United States containing the central part of the city of Los Angeles as well as its southern and southeastern suburbs (both in Los Angeles  from windmill farms in the Tehachapi Valley.
