Jackson thinks her team is up to the challenge. ``We're a lot better than we were last year,'' said Jackson, pointing to Lancaster High transfer Janet Esber, a sophomore guard who has provided outside shooting and ball control. Esber scored 15 and had five assists against Bethel Christian.

``Having Janet is making a big difference because I don't have to bring the ball up the court anymore,'' Jackson said.

Wenbush said one reason Desert Christian has improved is that the Knights played summer-league ball against big schools like Palmdale and Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

``Having a chance to work against the good teams made us really improve,'' Wenbush said. ``We did pretty good.''

Wenbush figures to be the Knights' primary scorer. Her high-game this year is 19 points against Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. She is impressed with her team's overall improvement and confidence.

``I'm expecting the team to be better,'' she said, ``because now we've got the same people back, and everyone knows what to expect from the other players.''

Paraclete power: Paraclete (4-3) has been holding its own against bigger schools. It knocked off Littlerock 59-48 in the second round of the Valencia tournament last Friday.

Sophomore Jackie Kolesar, who scored 23 against the Lobos, said she has grown up this year after a solid freshman campaign.

``It was kind of different for me last year because everyone was older than me,'' she said. ``I understand a lot more this year, it's just about experience.''

Kolesar, averaging 16.3 points with a high of 27, said Erica Hernandez's development is a big boost. Hernandez, a 5-8 junior, is averaging 10.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.8 steals and 2.7 assists. Last year she averaged just 1.7 points.

``Erica has really stepped up from last year,'' Kolesar said. ``She's not just taking part in the scoring, but the rebounding, too. She's a big reason why we're a better team.''

Paraclete played Palmdale on Wednesday and travels to Tehachapi on Friday. The team's other key player is center Christine Lambert, who is averaging 13.3 points and 10.7 rebounds.
