REGION NOW PART OF 661; NEW AREA CODE DEBUTS TODAY IN PART OF OLD 805.

Byline: Charles F. Bostwick Daily News Staff Writer

Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  residents can start getting used to a new area code.

Effective today, the 805 area code splits in half, with Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, , Kern County and the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region.  spokeswoman Julia Wilson said. ``It's what we call `permissive dialing.' You can dial either for the next six months.''

Approved by the California Public Utilities Commission The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC; also often commonly referred to as simply the PUC) [1] is a state Public Utilities Commission which regulates privately-owned utilities in the state of California, including electric power,  in November 1997, 661 is the 24th area code in California.

Telephone company officials had told customers in November to expect public meetings on the second 805 split to start in May, but now think they are a year or two away. The second split could occur in 2002 or 2003, officials said.

Although the 805 change will have the greatest impact locally, corners of Kings, Monterey, Fresno and Tulare counties will also be affected. The eastern portion of Kern County that was in the 760 area code will remain 760.

Beginning today and for the next six months, callers can dial either 805 or 661. In addition, customers in the 805 and 661 area codes can call between the areas without using the code.

While people in Santa Clarita will still be able to call Ventura County numbers for the next six months without dialing an area code, phone company officials advise them to do so.

``It's a good idea to start practicing,'' Wilson said.

People should also remember to change their speed dialers and computer modems, she added.

Beginning Aug. 14, outside callers who dial 805 trying to reach Santa Clarita will get a recorded message reminding them of the new 661 area code. They then will have to redial In telecommunication, an automatic redial is a service feature that allows the user to dial, by depressing a single key or a few keys, the most recent telephone number dialed at that instrument. .

The reminder message will end Nov. 13.

The area code change does not uniformly apply to cellular telephones. GTE advises cell phone users to check with their service company to see if their area code will change.

``It differs,'' Wilson said. ``It depends on how the service provider has the hookup hookup,

 to the cell phone.''

The area code split will not increase the cost of phone calls, officials said. Distance and time determine the cost of a call.
