REGENT INTERNATIONAL HOTELS TO OPERATE NEW LONDON WILSHIRE HOTEL
LONDON, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Regent International Hotels today announced that it will operate the new 309-room London Wilshire Hotel, marking the return to this capital city of the internationally known luxury chain. The hotel, which is scheduled to open later this year is owned by Hazama Corporation (U.K.) Ltd.
Making the announcement in London, Regent International Hotels' Chairman, Robert H. Burns, said that the U.K. hotel has many similarities to the Regent, Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, Calif.
"Both were built in a similar era, both have many of the same design and architectural features and both have gone through considerable changes before joining the Regent group," Burns said.
Other Regent hotels scheduled to open later this year and next include The Regent, New York; The Regent, Milan; The Regent, Bali and The Regent, Jakarta. RIH currently operates ten luxury hotels around the world.
The new London Wilshire was originally the Great Central Hotel built in 1899, and occupies a prime site near Regent's Park and adjacent to Marylebone Station. One noted historian has described the building as "one of the best examples of late Victorian architecture...regarded in its day as the best hotel in London."
Under the guidance of English Heritage, the property is currently undergoing extensive reconstruction which will restore and replace many of the building's original features and return it to the prominence it enjoyed at the turn of the century.
The completed hotel will have 309 of the largest guest rooms in London, averaging some 535 square feet in size, with junior suites and deluxe doubles up to 775 square feet.
The building surrounds an eight-story glass-roofed atrium, originally a courtyard for horsedrawn cabs and carriages. This feature provides a source of natural light for guest rooms facing the center of the building and will become a unique social focus for the hotel.
Hazama Corporation started work on the hotel reconstruction in the spring of 1989.
"It is a project that has become both a challenge and an inspiration," commented Tamio Nakamura, managing director of Hazama Corporation (U.K.) Ltd.
"We took on an original building which had considerable architectural significance, interior grandeur, structural solidity and functionalism, and it is these qualities which will allow the hotel to become once again one of the best in London."
The agreement to manage the new property marks a long-planned return to London for Regent, former owners, then managers, of The Dorchester.
"We are delighted to be back in London," said Burns, "and with such an exciting property. The hotel has an immense amount of character and is destined to become yet another Regent landmark."
The agreement consolidates Regent International Hotels' expansion into Europe, which starts in September with the opening of The Regent, Milan.
Regent International Hotels operates luxury hotels in New Zealand (Auckland), Australia (Sydney and Melbourne), Fiji (Nadi Bay), Thailand (Bangkok), Taiwan (Taipei), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) and the U.S. (Beverly Hills) as well as in Hong Kong and Singapore.
