capabilities

SCH Technologies today announced the availability of its SAN-enabling library management See version control. software, REELswitch(TM). An integral part of StorageTek's (NYSE:STK) REEL(TM) suite of storage management solutions, REELswitch enables StorageTek's(TM) PowderHorn(TM) and WolfCreek(TM) tape libraries to be placed on a Storage Area Network (SAN).

In addition to making the libraries available for use in a SAN, REELswitch provides Dynamic Drive Allocation (DDA) in the SAN environment. It automatically allocates tape drives, allowing them to be used at maximum capacity. "SCH pioneered the ability to SAN-enable tape libraries. Through this addition of the PowderHorn and WolfCreek libraries to our list of supported libraries, customers can further leverage their storage investments," stated Denise Reier, vice president of marketing for SCH Technologies. "Our customers can now extend the value they receive from their REEL-powered, fully automated SAN, to include ALL of their libraries."

Other advanced SAN capabilities provided by REELswitch: -0-

Automated Administration of the SAN environment:
REELswitch eliminates the need for manual administration of the
SAN by sensing the status of tape devices connected to the SAN
and interfacing with the Hub and/or Switch to automatically
switch tape devices. Other solutions require operator
     intervention for switching.

     Automated Operations:
REELswitch automates the labor-intensive tasks involved with
general library maintenance. These automated tasks include
off-site tape rotation, tape inventory, removal and stocking of
scratch tapes and tape drive cleaning.

     IntegriCheck:
REELswitch's IntegriCheck feature improves the integrity of tape
content and quickly isolates problems for resolution.
IntegriCheck detects faulty hardware and automatically senses if
a library door is open. It also tests for defective or missing
tapes. When problems are detected, REELswitch can alert an
administrator via a third-party application, such as a pager,
e-mail, fax or through a systems management interface.

     Automated Library Inventory:
REELswitch dramatically reduces the personnel time required to
perform manual inventories. The software quickly mounts and
unmounts every tape, verifies tape identity, fingerprints new
tapes and updates the catalog. It even ensures the integrity of
     library tape content.

REELswitch will be a topic of discussion at FORUM 1999, StorageTek's annual user group conference, being held October 3-6 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in San Diego, California. SCH vice president of marketing, Denise Reier, will discuss how to SAN-enable WolfCreek and PowderHorn libraries on Monday, October 4, from 2:50 - 3:50 p.m. Other REEL software-related events at FORUM include a LANfree Backup(TM) demonstration, powered by the REEL software, and software sessions by three StorageTek REEL customers -- Citibank Singapore, Walgreens and Daewoo Motor Company. In addition, Bill Johnson, vice president and general manager of StorageTek's Storage Management Software Business Group, will hold a non-disclosure session to discuss the most recent StorageTek software developments and strategies.
