REDMAN'S METHOD ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN SAXOPHONIST'S PLAYBOY SET.

Byline: Fred Shuster Music Writer

This weekend's Playboy Jazz Festival The Playboy Jazz Festival is an annual event sponsored by Playboy Enterprises to celebrate jazz as well as feature both established and up and coming musicians of the genre. It was founded by Hugh Hefner and was first held in Chicago, Illinois at the Chicago Stadium in 1959.  gives musicians the rare opportunity to play for a full Hollywood Bowl The Hollywood Bowl is a modern amphitheatre at 2301 North Highland Avenue in Hollywood, California, USA, that is used primarily for music performances. The "bowl" in this context is the natural cavity in the earth into which the amphitheater is built, rather than the shape of the  - as the crowd chats and chews their way through the music.

Critics criticize, but fans adore the event, and the headliners are used to being upstaged by sun, salmon and Napa Valley Napa Valley, Calif.: see under Napa.

Charismatic young saxophonist Joshua Redman Joshua Redman (born February 1, 1969) is a prominent American Neo-bop jazz saxophonist who records for Nonesuch Records.

Redman, who is both African American and Jewish American, was born in Berkeley, California, to the late jazz saxophonist Dewey Redman and his wife, Renee
is one who welcomes the chance to provide a soundtrack to the Bowl experience. Redman has played the popular outdoor venue multiple times and looks forward to his Saturday slot between sets by the pioneering Cuban bassist Israel ``Cachao'' Lopez and pop/bluesman Keb' Mo'.

``It's obviously not the most intimate setting, but it's always nice to play to a large number of people - some of whom may be listening and some whom may not be,'' said Redman, 36, a Harvard grad and son of famous free-jazz saxist Dewey Redman Dewey Redman (born Walter Redman in Fort Worth, Texas, United States, May 17, 1931; d. Brooklyn, New York, September 2, 2006)[1] was an American free jazz saxophonist. . ``I enjoy playing music, and we embrace any opportunity to play and express ourselves. I relish it and enjoy the diversity of the bill. Sure, it's not (New York's famed) Village Vanguard The Village Vanguard is a jazz club, located at 178 Seventh Avenue South (just below West 11th St.) in New York City, which has been around since 1935, and has featured all the big names in jazz. It was founded by Max Gordon (died 1989) and is now run by his wife, Lorraine Gordon. , but I'm not sure I'd want to play the Vanguard every night.''

Since his self-titled 1993 debut was met by a chorus of acclaim, heralding a gifted and exciting new jazz talent, Redman has gone after ``the moment'' in stage and studio work. Two new examples of that spirit have just hit stores: ``Momentum,'' recorded with the Elastic Band that joins him at the Bowl, and ``SF Jazz Collective (Live),'' featuring the nonprofit Bay Area octet An eight-bit storage unit. In the international community, octet is often used instead of byte.

(jargon, networking) octet - Eight bits. This term is used in networking, in preference to byte, because some systems use the term "byte" for things that are not 8 bits long.
for which he is music director.

As always, Redman has no set list planned for Saturday's edition of the Elastic Band (with keyboardist/bassist Sam Yahel, guitarist Jeff Parker Jeff Parker can refer to more than one person:
  • Jeff Parker (ice hockey), a professional ice hockey player.
  • Jeff Parker (guitarist), guitarist for the band Tortoise.
and drummer Jeff Ballard). Ideally, the group will break into the lyrical group improvisation that fires the new album's standout reading of the Ornette Coleman ballad ``Lonely Woman.''

Coleman means a lot to Redman, whose father played with the free-jazz great for a number of years in the '70s. Along with the Coleman cut on ``Momentum,'' the SJ Jazz Collective handles three of them on the new live effort.

``A gigantic influence on virtually every jazz musician who came afterward,'' Redman says. ``I've been hearing Ornette for literally my entire life. He's meant so much: He introduced a new model for jazz musicians, a new direction and a path of freedom, as it were - a way to improvise without a predetermined pre·de·ter·mine

rhythm structure. That's probably his greatest single innovation. He devised collective group improvisations without depending on the customary landmarks.''

Would he promise an Ornette tune for the Bowl set?

``I honestly have no idea what we're gonna do,'' he said. ``I never come up with set lists before a concert. I go with the feel of the room and extend the compositional spirit to every aspect of the performance. That way of thinking is in itself a tribute to Ornette.''
