REDESIGNED CAMARO Z28 TO PACE 1993 INDIANAPOLIS 500
REDESIGNED CAMARO Z28 TO PACE 1993 INDIANAPOLIS 500 INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Chevrolet's next-generation
1993 Camaro Z28 coupe has been named Official Pace Car for the 77th running of the Indianapolis Indianapolis (ĭn'dēənă`pəlĭs), city (1990 pop. 731,327), state capital and seat of Marion co., central Ind., on the White River; selected 1820 as the site of the state capital (which was moved there in 1825), inc. 1847. 500 on May 30, 1993.
The announcement was made jointly by Tony George, president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Jim Perkins, general manager of Chevrolet and vice president of General Motors (NYSE: GM). Chevrolet returns as the "500" pace car for a record ninth time, and Camaro for a record fourth. No make or model of car has paced the 33-car field for the Memorial weekend classic as often. "It is our pleasure to welcome Chevrolet back once again as the Official Pace Car," George commented. "It is exciting for the '500' to participate in this public re-introduction of the Camaro." "Chevrolet's association with the Speedway goes way, way back," Perkins commented, "to the days of Louis Chevrolet. It continues today stronger than ever. We've paced the race nine times, and our Chevy Indy V-8 race engine has won the race the last five years in a row. In 1993 we're coming to the track with a new Camaro and a new Indy V-8. Louis would really be tickled." The 1993 Camaro Z28 coupe is an all-new version of the Camaro model line which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1992. Beneath the futuristic body styling beats the heart of a 275-hp version of the Corvette LT1 5.7-Litre (350 cubic inch) V-8 engine. The 1993 Camaro Z28 will be able to pace the Indianapolis 500 "as is," with no performance modifications necessary. Only the USAC safety package -- strobe lights, roll bar, safety harnesses and on-board fire extinguisher -- will be added to the three Camaro Z28s that will be prepared for on-track duty at Indy. The paint scheme for the Official Pace Car is black over white, with a rainbow ribbon spiral highlighting the diagonal separation of the paint along the sides and back of the car. So far only a color graphic of the car has been released to the public. Chevrolet will unveil the actual 1993 Camaro Z28 Pace Car at the Indianapolis Auto Show in late December.
