REDELL'S CALLS BEAT CITY STARS : S. SECTION 18, CITY SECTION 15.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

One day somebody will tell St. Francis High School football coach Bill Redell Bill Redell (born April 17, 1941 in Red Bluff, California) is an American football coach and member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Redell serves as head coach at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, California, since 2000, and has formed them into one of  that he can't use the ``fumblerooski'' play anymore. Until that time, the creative offensive mastermind will keep calling it, much to the chagrin of his opponents.

touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull the Southern Section back into the game.

The Southern Section scored the game-winning touchdown six minutes later when Westlake's Casey Preston hooked up with Warriors teammate Jon Weems on a 40-yard score to win the game 18-15 in front of an estimated 5,000 fans.

, Redell's tricky play calling got plenty of attention.

``That was coach Redell all the way,'' said Preston, who completed 8 of 15 passes for 120 yards, one touchdown and two intercpetions. ``We only practiced it twice, but it's a pretty easy play to get down. Tonight it worked perfectly.''

On the play, the center fakes a snap to the quarterback and then lays the ball down a yard behind the line of scrimmage line of scrimmage

. While the quarterback and running backs are simulating a pitch-play to get the defense moving in one direction, a guard sweeps down the line in the opposite direction, picks up the ball and then runs for dear life.

``It goes against everything that's taught to a defense,'' Redell said. ``That's why it's been outlawed in college and the pros. It probably should be outlawed in high school, too.''

Royal's Nielsen never ran the play until Sunday, not even during two weeks of practice. But starting guard Joe Sarcinella (Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. ), who took the first one 58 yards to open the game, was forced to the sidlelines with an injury. As a result, in the fourth quarter Redell asked Nielsen if he was willing to give it a shot. The USC-bound defensive end couldn't resist.

``I just picked it up and started running,'' Nielsen said. ``It was great.''

The Southern Section's late rally ruined a fabulous game by the City Section defense, specifically a defensive backfield that dominated most of the action.

Kennedy cornerback Waking Bailey and Taft corner Keith Johnson combined for three interceptions. Bailey returned one 58 yards in the second quarter to set up a 7-yard touchdown run by North Hollywood's Dante Clay to put the City Section ahead 15-6.

Earlier, San Pedro's Travis White recovered a fumble in the end zone to put the City Section ahead 7-0.

Agoura's Jason Gordon, who had 79 yards rushing, socred on a 45-yard run to make the score 7-6 in the second quarter.

The Soutern Section was forced to use the running game and trick plays A trick play, also known as a gadget play, is a play in American football that uses deception and unorthodox strategies to fool the opposing team. Trick plays are highly risky, usually with a large potential for a loss of yards or turnover, but the payoff is often high with  because of Bailey, Johnson and the rest of the athletic defensive backfield.

``We knew they had a lot of guys in the passing game, but we felt like we could take that away with our players,'' said Bailey, who will soon decide between Fresno State, Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. The only defensive breakdowns came on the two ``fumblerooskies'' and Weems' long touchdown reception.

Bailey can accept getting beat on the trick plays. But Weems' touchdown was simply a blown coverage. On it, the City Section was in a zone and Bailey chased Bailey Chase (born Bailey Chase Luetgert on May 1, 1972 in Chicago, Illinois) is a stage and television actor known for his recurring roles as Graham Miller in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Christopher "Chris" Robert Hughes (from 2003 through 2005) in the soap opera  a wide receiver to the sidelines Sidelines

. That opened the middle of the field for Weems, who was all alone because a safety never came over to help.

``He just ran a straight post and he was wide open,'' Bailey said.

On the game-winning touchdown drive, Preston went exclusively to Westlake teammates. Weems had a 28-yard catch to start the drive and tight end Scott Swaving caught a 13-yard pass on a 3rd-and-10 from the 44-yard line.
