SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - During the first month of the city's red-light camera enforcement program, more than 1,000 notices were mailed to motorists caught running stop lights, authorities said.

Cameras installed at five Santa Clarita intersections, recording 24 hours a day, produced photos of red-light runners - including the pictures of drivers' faces and license plates - that resulted in the mailing of 1,062 notices.

Many of the notices were actual citations, which carry a $341 fine. But Sgt. James Anderson James Anderson can refer to these persons:

of the Santa Clarita sheriff's station was careful to distinguish between notices and citations.

Offenders driving rental cars and company vehicles, for example, are harder to pinpoint, so notices are sent first and often result in citations, Anderson said.

After a 30-day trial period, the program - coordinated by the city of Santa Clarita and the local sheriff's station - began on Aug. 7. Unlike the trial period, motorists caught running red lights could expect to be hit with hefty fines.

Anderson said it is not yet clear how many citations were issued in the first 30 days, but community response has been positive.

``I haven't received any complaints,'' he said. ``A lot of people have called to say they're happy with it. Even the people who have been caught, they're happy with the system, just not about being caught.''

The data collected by the cameras are sent via a high-speed Internet See broadband.  line to an Arizona-based company where the images are narrowed to the ones that capture violators.

The intersections fitted with cameras are: Bouquet bouquet

Canyon Road and Seco Canyon Road; Orchard orchard, generally an area on which fruit or nut trees are planted and cultivated. The words grove and plantation are often used when the fruits are tropical, e.g., a "citrus grove" or a "banana plantation.  Village Road and Lyons Avenue; McBean Parkway and Newhall Ranch Road; McBean and Magic Mountain Parkway and Whites Canyon Road and Soledad Canyon Soledad Canyon is a long narrow canyon / valley located in Los Angeles County, California between the cities of Palmdale and Santa Clarita. Soledad Canyon contains the localities of Vincent, Acton, Ravenna, and Agua Dulce.  Road.

``People who live around those intersections have said they had become accustomed to waiting at a green light,'' Anderson said. ``They knew to expect people to run red lights. But that's changing.''
