RECYCLING CHARITY TO MOVE OUT.
A furniture recycling charity is making tracks to a new home.
Track 2000 is to leave its prominent spot on the corner of Penarth Road and the Taff Embankment in Grangetown, Cardiff, because workers need more space.
Since its launch in 1991, Track 2000 has expanded more than founders Tony Crocker and Terry Parry ever thought it would.
And now, with nine heavy goods lorries in daily use, Resource House - in a built-up, residential area - has been deemed unsuitable.
'The relocation is an expansion of our services,' said director Mr Crocker.
'The current building is not suitable as we now have extra transport and equipment and feel it is unfair on the residents to have vehicles coming in and going out.
'We need an industrial building on an industrial site.'
Mr Crocker and Mr Parry are looking at premises in Bridgend as a main base for their outreach projects - although they plan to set up another training and recycling centre in Cardiff as well.
'We have identified a number of potential places but it's not going to happen overnight as there are a number of issues, such as match funding, to deal with,' said Mr Crocker.
'We are looking at a time scale of about 12 to 18 months.'
Mr Crocker added any profits from the sale of the landmark building would be ploughed back into the charity.
Track 2000 recycles household and commercial furniture before passing items on to underprivileged families.
It also runs education programmes and training to build the confidence of those out of work and help them find jobs.
Track 2000 employs 15 staff and has about 30 volunteers working in Cardiff, Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan. Wait-and-see policy for site: Neighbours are waiting to find out what will happen to the Track 2000 site.
Residents living on the Taff Embankment and parallel streets are sandwiched between Resource House and the former Avana Bakery site where developers want to build a 334-bed student complex.
Grangetown councillor Francesca Montemaggi said: 'We would like to know what type of development is going to be on the Track 2000 site.
'But the question is of size rather than whether any development will be residential or commercial.
'With Avana, the size of the site is astonishing, but Track 2000 is much smaller.
'It's just a question of waiting to see who will buy the site.'
