Events scheduled by the Willamalane Park & Recreation District for the week of Sept. 20:

Thursday, Sept. 20

Sharps and Flats - Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Adult Activity Center. For ages 50 and older. Singing group open to all. No auditions necessary. Free.

After-school Enrichment - Sports Sampler sampler, sample piece of needlework or embroidery, of silk, cotton, or worsted, for the preservation of some pattern or as an example of the ability of a child or a beginner. In museums and private collections there are samplers dating from as early as 1643. . Soccer, basketball, T-ball and volleyball. Learn about them all in noncompetitive sports class. Register at Community Recreation Center. Held at Thurston Elementary School elementary school: see school.  Thursdays through Nov. 15., 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. $50.

Portraiture portraiture, the art of representing the physical or psychological likeness of a real or imaginary individual. The principal portrait media are painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography. From earliest times the portrait has been considered a means to immortality.  in Watercolors, Beginning and Intermediate - Focus on painting from several views. Registration required at Adult Activity Center. For ages 18 and older. Sept. 20 to Nov. 8, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. $48 for eight weeks.

Friday, Sept. 21

Folk Dance folk dance, primitive, tribal, or ethnic form of the dance, sometimes the survival of some ancient ceremony or festival. The term is used also to include characteristic national dances, country dances, and figure dances in costume to folk tunes.  - Ongoing. For ages 50 and older. At Adult Activity Center. Each Friday, 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Free.

Chair Massage Clinic - At Adult Activity Center. For ages 50 and older. Treat yourself to a neck and shoulder massage. 15- or 30-minute appointments. Weekly, Fridays, by appointment. $10 and $20.

Friday Movie - At Teen Center. Popcorn POPCORN - AI system built on POP-2. "The POPCORN Reference Manual", S. Hardy, Essex U, Colchester, 1973.  and a movie hit, rated up to PG-13. 3:30 p.m. Free.

Specialized Recreation - Miniature golf and pizza. For adults 18 and up. Register at Community Recreation Center. 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Fee $5. Bring $15 for food and golf.

Middle School Dance - Held at Memorial Building. Bring student identification. For students in grades six through eight. 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. $5.

Saturday, Sept. 22

Woodworking Basics - New on Saturdays. For ages 18 and older. Project-oriented class to learn proper use of basic tools. Registration required. At Adult Activity Center. 9 a.m. to noon. $15 for two weeks.

Tsalila Salmon Bake - A popular event in Reedsport. For ages 50 and older. Register at Adult Activity Center. 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. $36.

Swim Lessons - Willamalane Park Swim Center. Four lessons. Call 736-4080 for registration and times. $17.

Saturday Play The Saturday Play is a regular feature on BBC Radio 4 and is described as "Thrillers, mysteries, love stories and detective fiction, as well as an occasional special series."http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/arts/saturday_play.  - Drop-in fun for ages birth to 6 at the Community Recreation Center. Weekly. 10 a.m. to noon. No registration required. $3 per class.

Kalapuya Games - An afternoon at Dorris Ranch filled with spear challenges and games of chance known to the Kalapuya Indians. Call 954-7116 to register. 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. $3.

Monday, Sept. 24

Swim Lessons - Willamalane Park Swim Center. Mondays and Wednesdays, eight lessons. Call 736-4080 for registration and times. $34.

Splash! Lively Park Swim Center - Closed through Oct. 7 for annual maintenance.

Qigong Qigong Definition

Qigong (pronounced "chee-gung," also spelled chi kung) is translated from the Chinese to mean "energy cultivation" or "working with the life energy.
 - Use posture, exercise, breathing and concentration to enhance your health. For ages 18 and older. Runs through Dec. 3, 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Register at Adult Activity Center. $30.

Yoga yoga (yō`gə) [Skt.,=union], general term for spiritual disciplines in Hinduism, Buddhism, and throughout S Asia that are directed toward attaining higher consciousness and liberation from ignorance, suffering, and rebirth. , Evening - Use yoga to boost physical, mental and emotional fitness. Register at Adult Activity Center. For ages 18 and older. Through Dec. 3. Beginning, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Advanced, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. $30.

Tuesday, Sept. 25

Quilting quilting, form of needlework, almost always created by women, most of them anonymous, in which two layers of fabric on either side of an interlining (batting) are sewn together, usually with a pattern of back or running (quilting) stitches that hold the layers  Circle - For experienced quilters. Memoir Writing: The Next Chapter - Learn skills to write a memoir that others will want to read. Registration required at Adult Activity Center. For ages 50 and older. 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. $6.

Gentle Exercise - Breathing and exercise techniques that increase flexibility, strength and mobility. Begin anytime. At Adult Activity Center. For ages 50 and older. On Tuesdays and Thursdays. 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. $1 per class.

Health and Nutrition - A talk by Dr. Sunny Kierstyn, `Stop and Reverse Arthritis.' 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Register at Adult Activity Center. Free.

Early Childhood Recreation - Jewelry jewelry, personal adornments worn for ornament or utility, to show rank or wealth, or to follow superstitious custom or fashion.

Wood Carving wood carving, as an art form, includes any kind of sculpture in wood, from the decorative bas-relief on small objects to life-size figures in the round, furniture, and architectural decorations.

The woods used vary greatly in hardness and grain.
 - At Adult Activity Center. Instruction available for beginners; drop-in studio for experienced carvers. Furnish your own tools and wood. Weekly, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Free.

E-mail - At Adult Activity Center. For ages 50 and older. Learn how to use e-mail. Prerequisite is Computer Basics or equivalent. Tuesday and Thursday, 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration required. $12.

Pool Room - Adult Activity Center. Women have priority Tuesdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursdays, noon to 3 p.m. Ongoing. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 50 cents a day.

Come Tat With Me! - Learn a technique or complete a project. Registration required. At Adult Activity Center. For ages 50 and older. Every second and fourth Wednesday. 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Instructor: Cheryl Birch. $40 for eight weeks.

Pool Tournaments - At Teen Center. Sign up for weekly tournaments and show off your skills. Ongoing, Wednesdays. 4:30 p.m. Free.

Thursday, Sept. 27

Beachcombing in Florence - Celebrate summer's close with a trip to the beach. For ages 50 and older. Register at Adult Activity Center. 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. $36.

Our Healthy Planet - Oregon Chautauqua Chau`tau´qua

1. a meeting, usually held in the summer outdoors or under a temporary tent, providing public lectures combined with entertainment such as concerts and plays. It originated in the village of Chautauqua, N. Y.
 presents a lecture, `Roots of Environmentalism' at the Adult Activity Center. The environmental movement borrows from the Romantic movement of the 19th century, expressed in music, art and literature. Registration required. 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Free.

Mat Pilates - At Adult Activity Center. For all levels, ages 18 and older. Sept. 27 to Dec. 6. 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Registration required. $60.

Stress Management and Relaxation - Yoga postures This is a list of some common Yoga postures, or asanas. It would be impossible to delineate all recognized postures and their variations. In addition, other labels may be given to postures, depending on the school, the origin of the system within that school, or the yogi or guru  and deep relaxation to rebalance the system.
