RECORDS TO BE SAFE IF LAKE SWITCHES HANDS : DFG MUM ON CASTAIC ISSUE.

Byline: Brett Pauly Daily News Staff Writer

One of the biggest worries among Castaic Lagoon bass anglers is whether potential world-record catches will be impacted if the lake's fishing operations change hands.

They can rest easy.

``There won't be any problem with getting records there, so they don't have to worry at all,'' said Stephany Wilken, world record secretary for the International Game Fish Association, a Pompano Beach Pompano Beach (pŏm`pənō), city (1990 pop. 72,411), Broward co., SE Fla., on the Atlantic coast and the Intracoastal Waterway; inc. 1908. She said that there are no special considerations for trophies taken at private or for-profit lakes, as long as they are caught in accordance with IGFA IGFA International Game Fish Association

standards. Even if a prospective record largemouth is released, it is still eligible if properly documented - weighed on land and photographed. (Other data, including bass measurements, tackle specifications and the names of two witnesses, will make a case stronger but are not mandatory.)

Of course, Wilken pointed out, ``A lot of people like to keep their world-record catches, and that's OK.''

Currently, there is a 12-inch minimum and a five-fish limit for bass at the state-owned and L.A. County-run lake.

Outdoor Safaris International, the Corona concessionaire the county is appointing to take over the fishing, boating and camping operations at the lagoon, plans to enforce a catch-and-release policy for bass if the privatization privatization: see nationalization.

That would be fine with the state.

``They can enact their own regulations that are as stringent as ours or more so,'' said Mike Giusti, a Department of Fish and Game associate fisheries biologist who is well versed in the Castaic Lagoon issue.

Control is passed from one layer to the next, starting at the application layer in one station, proceeding to the , however, will allow anglers to keep pending world-record bass if they so choose.

Meanwhile, Tim Farley, chief of the DFG's Inland Fisheries Division, said the department is waiting for the written response to OSI's application for an aquaculture aquaculture, the raising and harvesting of fresh- and saltwater plants and animals. The most economically important form of aquaculture is fish farming, an industry that accounts for an ever increasing share of world fisheries production.  permit - a requirement for the concessionaire - before commenting further on the lagoon issue. Maxwell has said that a legal opinion may be required to settle the matter.

Should the lagoon concession proposal be approved, Farley said his biggest worry would be, ``What do we do with the bass that are in there now?''

It's a quandary, considering that the lagoon was built with public funds See Fund, 3.
