RECORD VERDICT REPORTED IN KOREAN AIR LINES TRIAL

DETROIT, March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by Charfoos & Christensen, P.C.:
Today, March 12, 1993, a United States District Court jury from the Eastern District of Michigan, Southern Division, returned a verdict of $1.5 million for the family of Joyce Chambers, who suffered a wrongful death when the Korean Air Lines plane on which she was a passenger was shot down over Russian airspace on Aug. 31, 1983.
The verdict in this case, with interest, could total approximately $3.2 million. This is a record for Korean Air Lines death claims. The prior two cases produced verdicts of $1.3 million and a mistrial.
Korean Air Lines Flight 007 departed Anchorage, Alaska, at 10 a.m. (EDT) on Aug. 31, 1983, en route to Seoul, Korea. About 12 noon (EDT), KAL 007 entered the undisputed airspace of the Soviet Union which dispatched fighter planes which attacked and destroyed the commercial airliner, killing all 269 persons aboard.
After the plane was fatally hit, the living passengers suffered through decompression and knowledge of impending death as the plane descended into the Sea of Japan. The sheer terror suffered by all those on board was one of the principle bases for the award in this case.
The lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District, was filed by the law firm of Charfoos & Christensen, P.C., on Aug. 29, 1985. The deceased, Joyce Chambers, was 34 years old at the time of her death, was unmarried and without children. She was represented in the trial by attorney Lawrence Charfoos.
