Stoffel started riding with friends about 7:30 a.m. in the 8300 block of La Tuna Canyon Road, but two of the friends turned around because it was too hot, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Teresa Coyle.

The other friend, a nurse, noticed he wasn't behind her and returned to find him slumped over the handlebars of his bicycle in a standing position, but unconscious, Coyle said.

Temperatures could remain in the 80s or 90s in the valleys today, but this week's weather is expected cool down a little, officials said.

``There will be a slight cooling trend,'' said Bill Hoffer, a spokesman for the National Weather Service, who warned daytime temperatures could continue to be uncomfortably warm for some residents in the inland valleys.

People facing heat in the valleys should take precautions, said Hoffer, noting that heat can be dangerous for seniors with heart problems.

``No. 1: Stay indoors,'' he said. ``Stay out of the heat during the hottest time of day. Go to a mall or a movie or someplace some·place

Residents facing uncomfortable heat should also drink plenty of water and use fans, or take cool showers, Hoffer said.
