About 10,000 visitors flocked to the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  Street Fair on Saturday, which for the first time also included a Taste of Simi Valley, with local restaurants serving up popular dishes.

The event, hosted for the past 15 years by the Simi Chamber of Commerce, brings dozens of local businesses, community organizations - and this year 10 of the city's top eateries - face to face with the people they serve.

``I love the fair, just the fact that you get to meet some of the people in the community,'' said Kim Wilker, a Simi Valley resident.

Wilker said she liked the addition of the food this year, particularly since most of the entrees went for just one or two of the $1 tickets.

Pat Timsuren, owner of the Thai Kitchen in Simi Valley, offered up her restaurant's chicken and beef satay sa·tay also sa·té or sa·te

``I'm very happy we moved from Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. ,'' said Timsuren. ``We keep growing. We're very lucky.''

This year, 30 groups lined up on the waiting list wanting free exhibit space at the event. The turnout from local residents was the largest ever, said Leigh Nixon, president of the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce.

This year's street fair also included the annual emergency preparedness pre·par·ed·ness

``Really, our goal is education,'' said Chris Grigg, spokeswoman for the Red Cross of Ventura County.

But that education also included plenty of fun for the kids, with Army and Fire Department helicopters making landings throughout the day - and then opening their doors to crowds of eager youngsters.

The kids were also able to get a first-hand look at police motorcycles A police motorcycle is a motorcycle used by various police departments. ``I've gotten so many good questions its remarkable,'' said Doug Dodson, a senior agent with the U.S. Border Patrol.

Resident Kathy Frye said safe streets are one of the city's best features, but Saturday's event also brought out the people, resources and restaurants. ``Definitely good ribs!'' she said with a grin. ``This was a lot of fun.''
