and colleagues gathered Tuesday to tearfully dedicate a memorial to Deputy Shayne York, who was slain in August 1997 during an off-duty robbery near Buena Park Buena Park (bwā`nə), city (1990 pop. 68,784), Orange co., S Calif.; inc. 1953. Food processing, the manufacture of aircraft, and tourism are important to the city's economy. .

``If you would have asked me a year-and-a-half ago if something good could have come out of this, I would have said no,'' said Deputy Jennifer Parish, York's fiancee, who met him when both were assigned to the Peter J. Parish was joined by Sheriff Lee Baca Leroy David Baca (b. May 27 1942, East Los Angeles, California) is the Sheriff of Los Angeles County, California.

Sheriff's deputies volunteered their time and labor to design and build the memorial across the street from East Facility, often using donated materials.

Because York was shot in Buena Park, officers from that city's police department held charity golf tournaments and donated proceeds to help pay for the memorial.

``No one should die the way Shayne did, being compliant,'' said Sgt. Greg Simon, one of York's former supervisors at East Facility.

As a trumpeter played taps, deputies raised the flags - and then lowered them to half-staff - in the patio next to the monument. Later, Parish, Steele and the elder York lit the eternal flame to the mournful mourn·ful

The slain deputy's father fought back tears while paying tribute.

``I would rather have given my own life in place of my son's, but that cannot be,'' York told the crowd of sheriff's deputies, relatives and friends. ``We have had to learn how to adjust our lives without Shayne.''

York said that he thinks of his son every day, and cries every year on Shayne's birthday, on the anniversary of the killing and every time a holiday rolls around.

``This is something I will never get over (but) today makes things a little easier on the family,'' he said.

Meanwhile, the two men charged with killing York remain in custody without bail at the Orange County Jail, awaiting the trial that's expected to get under way in September, officials said.

Andre Montel Willis, 33, and Kevin Boyce, 27, could receive the death penalty if convicted of murder, robbery and burglary.

Capt. Taylor Moorehead, who was the commander of East Facility during York's tenure, said that the senseless nature of the killing also disgusted and saddened those the young deputy guarded.

``Even the inmates wrote letters. That's the part that I found amazing - even the inmates liked him,'' Moorehead said.
