Perhaps the biggest attraction during the hot summer weeks, said fair spokeswoman Teri Raley, is the cool ocean breeze The Ocean Breeze, (formerly Calypso, Azure Seas, and Dolphin) was an ocean liner, and later a cruise ship.

Formerly used for many years as a high speed mail and passenger liner (no freight), the Southern Cross

Their notable singles include "Go Daddy-O" and "You and Me and the Bottle Makes Three Tonight". The band went from a regular Wednesday night gig at the Derby in Hollywood, playing for a few hundred people,  to pop-rock duo Heart and popular rockers Uncle Kracker Matthew Shafer (born 9 November 1974, Mount Clemens, Michigan) better known by his stage name Uncle Kracker, is an American rock, country, and rap-rock musician. .

The fair will be full of traditional favorites, such as midway carnival rides and games, all kinds of food on a stick, chili cook-offs and fireworks fireworks: see pyrotechnics.

Contests will range from rabbit hopping to hog calling. Judges will chose the best lemon dessert and best pie.

``It's an extraordinary form of fun that we create ourselves and that we re-create every year,'' Raley said.

The fair will begin Wednesday and open at 11 a.m. daily through Aug. 10. During the run, planners expect 250,000 visits to the fair at Seaside Park, 10 W. Harbor Blvd.

Proven kid pleasers this year are Brad's World of Reptiles reptiles

``It's a great ride - tall, fast and spectacular,'' ride coordinator Tony Guadagno said of the slide. ``When kids ride it, they want to go again.''

Live music, stock car smashups and rodeo events are planned for the Grandstand Arena, where seating is free on a first-come, first-served “FCFS” redirects here. For the figure skating competition, see Four Continents Figure Skating Championships.

This week, Uncle Kracker will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Next week, Heart will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Rimes at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Other Grandstand Arena entertainment will include Spanish dancing horses, bull riding and a professional rodeo.

This year, for the first time, admission to the fair will cost just $1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays.

Livestock displays, dating back to the earliest fairs in the 1870s, give city slickers the chance to see swine, sheep and goats. Last year, animals accounted for almost 6,000 of the fair exhibits entered by more than 22,000 contestants.

Fairgoers will also get a feel for the county's farming past at Uncle Leo's Barn, with its donkey, goose, ducks and ponies. Some of the visitors could arrive at the right time to see eggs hatch.

Along with traditional black-and-white or color prints, a photography exhibit will feature digitally manipulated works.

Sponsors offered more than $130,000 in cash awards for winning entries at the fair last year, but Raley said most exhibitors are just interested in letting others see their prized possessions.

wood table created by an 85-year-old man, and you go, 'Wow, I can do that,''' Raley said.

The event is a celebration of community, Raley said, and Ventura County residents ``will be hard-pressed to go ... and not see someone they know.''
