``A lot of the studios were scared that when you don't have a narrative, especially with these kinds of game show-type programs, that there might not be enough interest out there for people to buy it,'' said Gord Lacey, president of the popular Web site TVShowsOnDVD.com. ``But the assumption that people don't want to have them on their shelves is wrong. Just like there are fans of 'Charmed' and 'The OC,' they want to own every episode of 'Survivor.'''

It was quickly followed by ``Survivor Season 2: The Australian Outback'' and ``Survivor All Stars: The Complete First Season.''

The first season of ``Amazing Race'' is set for release Sept. 27, but is already ranked fourth on the Amazon.com sales chart of reality-show DVDs, behind ``Newlyweds - Nick & Jessica: The Complete Second and Third Seasons,'' ``Newlyweds - Nick & Jessica - The First Season'' and ``The Simple Life 2.''

``What makes 'Survivor' and 'Amazing Race' ripe for DVD is the fact that they are action-oriented and competition-based,'' said Ken Ross, a CBS vice president and the general manager of consumer products. ``There are challenges and outdoor racing and different things bred into the contests that allow for repeated viewing.''

Just before Christmas, the seventh season of ``Race'' will bow on DVD. Ross said it has not yet been determined when or whether the seasons in between will become DVDs. The first season was several years ago, and the series has steadily grown in popularity.

``We wanted the overall buzz for the show to build in general and create pent-up demand so that we would increase the odds of having a big success,'' said Ross. ``Sometimes it's nice to have a few seasons go by and have it all resonate.  is how they got there,'' Ross said. ``We are hopefully providing a much more in-depth way of watching the competition.''

Lacey points out that while the DVD sets might be treats for true-blue fans, they often might be first-time viewing for others.

``Not everyone has seen these reality shows,'' he said. ``With 'Amazing Race,' I came in on Season 5, and I'm really pumped to see Season 1. I want to see how the series has evolved.''

The seventh season of ``Survivor'' will be released in early 2006, but the order and timing for other seasons have yet to be determined, with ratings for each season and the popularity of certain contestants figuring in heavily.

Along with ``Survivor'' and ``Amazing Race,'' ABC's ``Extreme Makeover: Home Edition'' is one of the most popular shows on television among any genre. It will make its DVD debut Nov. 22 with a two-disc set that is being marketed as ``The Most Inspiring and Unforgettable Makeovers from Season 1.''

``We put those out to test the marketplace,'' said Rodney Satterwite, executive vice president of operations for Genius. ``There are tons of fans of the series, and that's the primary target. We tried to make it a mix of makeover and about the personalities.''

A&E Home Video, behind DVD sets of the dramas ``Homicide,'' ``Highway to Heaven'' and ``Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman,'' is now fully embracing reality DVD by releasing its hit shows ``Dog the Bounty Hunter Dog the Bounty Hunter is a reality television show, chronicling Duane "Dog" Chapman's operations at his job, Da Kine Bail Bonds in Honolulu, Hawaii. ``We don't even see them really as reality programs; they are just dramas based on real life,'' said Kate Winn, A&E Home Videos' senior vice president of sales and marketing. ``What we are really focusing on is larger-than-life characters and their personal journeys. They are more dramatic than fiction.''
