REAL TEST BEGINS FOR SAUGUS CENTURIONS ENTER FOOTHILL LEAGUE PLAY WITH THREE FRESHMEN.

Byline: Julio Cortez Staff Writer

They're not the No. 1 pick to finish atop the Foothill League. But the Saugus High girls' basketball players have a chance to win their league opener Friday night at Canyon High.

``We're not everyone's favorite, but we can play with anybody in our league,'' said Saugus coach Eric Olsson. ``We play pretty good defense, and (Canyon) is pretty good. They press a lot and play a lot up and down the court.''

The Centurions will continue to play their three freshmen - Sheridan Arredondo, Annmarie Summerhays and Julia Bradley - who helped them finish third in the Monrovia tournament earlier in the season.

``Playing three freshmen is overwhelming,'' Olsson said. ``It's tough, but we will get better.''

Olsson believes his team should do well in league. But he's willing to promote JV players if the team doesn't progress as planned. His first choice will probably be Jessica Loring, a 6-foot-2 freshman.

The Centurions play their last preseason game today at 6:30 p.m. against Lancaster at Saugus.

``They're not as strong as Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill or Palmdale,'' Olsson said. ``They're a team that we can play with and learn from.''
