REAGAN STAMP WILL DEBUT IN SIMI VALLEY ON FEB. 9 COMMEMORATIVE MAY BE MOST POPULAR EVER ISSUED.

Byline: Eric Leach Staff Writer

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - Stamp collectors and postal officials are looking forward to Feb. 9 when Simi Valley will be the only city in the nation offering cancellations on the new Ronald Reagan stamps.

``I think it will be one of the most popular first-day issues of stamps ever,'' said Sue Morris, postmaster postmaster - The electronic mail contact and maintenance person at a site connected to the Internet or UUCPNET. Often, but not always, the same as the admin. The Internet standard for electronic mail (RFC 822) requires each machine to have a "postmaster" address; usually it is  of Simi Valley, where the post offices are expected to be mobbed.

``I'm really looking forward to this. It's a big honor for us. We're anticipating thousands of letters. We will do whatever it takes to get those canceled for the customers.''

The stamps will be sold and canceled at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Coordinates:

The stamps and cancellations will also be available at the two post offices in Simi Valley, including the main office at 2551 Galena galena (gəlē`nə) or lead glance, lustrous, blue-gray mineral crystallizing usually in cubes, sometimes in octahedrons. Elsewhere in the nation the stamps will be available Feb. 10.

``I would estimate it will be the biggest seller of all time. People throughout the world will want it,'' said Emilio Rocha, former postmaster for Lynwood, who attended ceremonies at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library this past week at which a replica of the stamp was unveiled.

``The first-day-of-issue postmark makes the stamps more valuable,'' said Don Smeraldi, manager for public affairs Those public information, command information, and community relations activities directed toward both the external and internal publics with interest in the Department of Defense. The service seeks to improve its performance through the development of efficient mail-handling systems and operates its own planning and engineering programs. . ``In general, commemorative stamps (such as the Ronald Reagan stamp) are more valuable because they are issued for a limited time, about one year.''

But Israel Bick, executive director of the International Stamp and Coin Collectors Society based in Van Nuys, said people will not get rich with the Reagan stamps canceled on the first day.

``There will be enormous interest because President Reagan was so popular. These provide enjoyment to give and keep as souvenirs. They are lovely things to pass on, but not to be construed as investments,'' said Bick, estimating that hundreds of thousands of people will be getting the first-day cancellations from Simi Valley.

``I think it's awesome. It's quite an honor to him and certainly the community,'' she said.

Terri Bouffiou, a spokeswoman for the Postal Service postal service, arrangements made by a government for the transmission of letters, packages, and periodicals, and for related services. Early courier systems for government use were organized in the Persian Empire under Cyrus, in the Roman Empire, and in medieval , said thousands of people will buy stamps and have them canceled Feb. 9 in Simi Valley, but thousands of others will obtain their cancellations by mailing them to Simi Valley in self-addressed envelopes. The cancellations for these mail-in requests will be given the Feb. 9 Simi Valley cancellations over a 30-day period, from Feb. 9 to March 9.

``Stamps are about history. That's really what stamps are: a record of our country's history,'' Bouffiou said.

One collector who said he plans to obtain the Reagan stamp cancellation from Simi Valley is Burton Harris of Granada Hills.

``I think Ronald Reagan is very important to the history of the United States “American history” redirects here. For the history of the continents, see History of the Americas.

Harris said that aside from its historical importance, the stamp was beautiful. ``It's great. It's the smile, the warmth - it's who the man was.''

The image for the stamp was painted by Michael Deas, the artist who also did stamps in honor of Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

It is the tradition of the Postal Service to honor prominent Americans with a stamp no sooner than 10 years after death, but U.S. presidents may be honored as early as the first birthday following their death.

He was born Feb. 6, 1911. Since Feb. 6 is a Sunday, officials decided to make the first day of issue Feb. 9.
