Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, -- Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, is known for postcard-perfect weather on New Year's Day New Year's Day, among ancient peoples the first day of the year frequently corresponded to the vernal or autumnal equinox, or to the summer or winter solstice. In the Middle Ages it was celebrated among Christians usually on Mar. 25. -- ask any Rose Bowl fan from the Midwest -- so a plunge in the park pool in the dead of winter doesn't quite draw the same involuntary shiver as it does in, say Maine. But the city of Santa Clarita's first Glacier Slide Polar Bear polar bear, large white bear, Ursus maritimus, formerly Thalarctos maritimus, of the coasts of arctic North America. Polar bears usually live on drifting pack ice, but sometimes wander long distances inland. Swim is all in fun. Those brave enough to don bathing suits are invited to take the plunge into the city Aquatic Center's water-slide pool. The dive is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 1. The aquatic center is at 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway. Doors for the event will open at 8 a.m. and admission is $4, which includes a towel. The pool will not be open for recreational swimming.
