EXCELLENT ADVICE

* Dr. Linda Hamilton's article, "Becoming a Dancer: Gotta Dance!" in the July issue of Dance Magazine was inspiring [page 79]. Thanks for excellent advice and numerous suggestions. As a former dancer, my eyes moistened to recall the eat-sleep-and-breathe passion of dancing described in her article, and the need to express that passion physically, emotionally, and intellectually. My passion bums as ardently as it did in the heyday of my performing years, but now I wish to channel that energy into literary pursuits as Dr. Hamilton has.

NUREYEV RETROSPECTIVE

* In February 1995 I purchased that month's Dance Magazine for an excerpt from Otis Stuart's book on Rudolf Nureyev Noun 1. Rudolf Nureyev - Russian dancer who was often the partner of Dame Margot Fonteyn and who defected to the United States in 1961 (born in 1938)

. I must confess that I did not read the magazine thoroughly and missed your comments in the Kickoff section ["Nijinsky, Nureyev, Gods of Dance," page 5].

I have just now read your commentary, and I have to say that I was moved by it. The "void," as you aptly call it, that was left in dance at that time with respect to a dominant (male) personality such as Nureyev or Nijinsky can still be felt, I think, even today.

I feel that Nureyev is still an enormous catalyst for creativity to artists--performers as well as visual artists--as a role model of classical male beauty, in dance and otherwise.

DIABETES AWARENESS

* I am a fourteen-year-old dancer who is responding to the article you printed in the September 1998 issue called "Dancing Through Diabetes" [page 74]. Thank you greatly for publishing this article on Zippora Karz because it has taught me many things. Your story on the NYCB NYCB New York City Ballet

soloist showed me that if you truly have a deep love and passion for the art of dance, then nothing will get in your way. In her case, the love was obviously so strong because she continued to dance even though she was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes juvenile diabetes

Your article also made me more aware of diabetes and how it can affect the average dancers. It amazed a·maze

me that Ms. Karz made it through a whole ballet when her blood sugar level was so low. I can't even imagine how hard that must have been for her. I enjoyed learning about her experiences--how much determination it must have taken to make it through everything in the dance world! I hope you continue to print stories like this one.

MORE CROSS-GENDERING ROLLS?

* It was interesting to read Muriel Topaz's article about American Repertory Dance Company ["ARDC ARDC Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission

Appearing with them was Dianne McIntyre, performing magnificently the Negro spirituals created by Helen Tamiris Helen Tamiris (1903 -1966) choreographer, modern dancer, and teacher (also known as Helen Becker).

Also on the program was "the first reconstruction" of Michio Ito's Pizzicati. Not so, since Washington-based dancer Dana Tai Soon Burgess performed the work here a few seasons ago. It was interesting to see a small woman perform choreography originally set on a man. In a question-and-answer session held after the performance, the company was asked if a man would ever be asked to appear with them. Answer--if he were old enough!

BRAVO BARYSHNIKOV

* I am a ballet student and an eleven-year-old subscriber to Dance Magazine. I received the May issue with Baryshnikov on the cover, read the article, and looked at the pictures ["Baryshnikov Light and Dark," page 44]. I have never seen him dance, but people who have seen him tell me how great he is. I think you should have put in some pictures of him dancing, because he is a fantastic dancer.

Twenty-one years ago we left Salt Lake City, pulled by an uneasiness about the future of dance, but even more because the land here meant a sense of place, of roots and belonging. This mostly wooded eighty acres had once been a hobby farm hobby farm

. We found a fine, abandoned old building-originally a schoolhouse, then a town hall-cleared the land, and moved it down the highway onto its foundation. It became our studio--and ChaliceStream was born.... The stories from area folk of who we were and what we did run from the comical to the libelous In the nature of a written Defamation ,a communication that tends to injure reputation. ; a favorite, still persisting among the tenacious, was that we were devil worshippers and the Lynn Dance Company concerts were a concealment for Satanic worship rites.... We have no set audiences; people hear about our Sunday and Christmas concerts and they come. If they like it, they come back. ChaliceStream is now an institution in this part of the country. No one is turned away from performances or our adult and children's classes. Now, area dancers who have studied with us are creating their own works; we provide them with a venue.

Last week I received a note from an elderly Polish woman living out on a farm who often comes to our concerts: "I'm glad you were born," she wrote. "You have brought so much beauty into my life."
