READERS' FAVORITE MOVIE QUOTES; ``GO AHEAD, MAKE MY DAY.'' FOR DAILY NEWS READERS, LIST MAKERS `MISINFORMED'.

Byline: Rob Lowman Daily News Entertainment Editor

You must remember this: Humphrey Bogart did not say, ``Play it again, Sam'' in ``Casablanca.''

Still, enough people thought so that it landed at No. 8 on our Daily News Readers Poll of the Top-10 Best Movie Quotes of All Time.

As a newspaper editor told Jimmy Stewart in ``The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,'' ``This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, we print the legend.''

So in a time-honored Hollywood tradition, we will include ``Play it again, Sam'' on our list with this caveat: Bogey simply said, ``Play it.'' Apparently, as time has gone by, people have been confused by what was said to Sam the piano player (Dooley Wilson). So let's clear it up.

At one point, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) says, ``Play it, Sam. Play `As Time Goes By.' ''

Later, Rick (Bogart) says, ``You played it for her. You can play it for me. If she can stand it, I can. Play it.''

Which brings us to another Daily News reader favorite, which was said by Bogey's future wife Lauren Bacall in ``To Have and Have Not'': ``You do know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow.''

Hot enough for you?

But it's in ``Some Like It Hot,'' where critic Bob Strauss finds one of his top-10 favorite lines: ``Well, nobody's perfect.'' It's said by millionaire Joe E. Browne after being informed by Jack Lemmon Noun 1. Jack Lemmon - United States film actor (1925-2001)

Along with Bob's list, we've included favorite lines from some people around Hollywood. For ``The X-Files'' creator Chris Carter Chris Carter may refer to:

This whole thing started when a so-called panel of experts picked their list of the best movie lines to mark the publication of ``The Guinness Book of Film.''

No. 1 for them was Agent 007's signature line, ``Bond. James Bond,'' spoken by debonair deb·o·nair also deb·o·naire

2. Affable; genial.

3. Carefree and gay; jaunty.

We were a bit suspicious, though, about that being the top line. As it turned out, it didn't even make Daily News readers' top 10. Was there a bias? Could it be that the Guinness experts, like the redoubtable re·doubt·a·ble

On the other hand, the Daily News readers' No. 1 line is as American as apple pie, baseball and .44 Magnums. In fact, it is from Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry in ``Sudden Impact'': ``Go ahead, make my day.''

It's a line that everybody has probably used once or twice in their lives - probably to their kids. President Reagan even used it: ``I have only one thing to say to tax increasers: Go ahead, make my day.''

The Great Communicator, in fact, was probably America's No. 1 chief executive when it came to citing the Hollywood classics. At Normandy, for the 40th anniversary of D-Day, the former actor sampled a quote from ``The Bridges at Toko-Ri'': ``I am paying for this microphone, Mr. Green!'' Another time, defending his Strategic Defense Initiative Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), U.S. government program responsible for research and development of a space-based system to defend the nation from attack by strategic ballistic missiles (see guided missile). , he echoed Luke Skywalker and friends in declaring, ``The Force is with us.''

Anyway, along with our readers' choices, Bob Strauss' picks and those from Hollywood, we've even included some from those silly twits at Guinness.

And, hey, don't sweat it if some other wise guy informs you no one ever actually said, ``Play it again, Sam.'' Just repeat another of Bogey's lines from ``Casablanca'': ``I was misinformed.''
