``This is history in the making,'' Daily News publisher Tracy Rafter said Sunday while introducing the project to Valley residents at Warner Ranch Park.

``This is the new day for people to connect with one another. And it's free.''

``The world is sort of watching this project. It is probably going to set the stage for journalism, for media, for communications,'' Rafter said. ``We are happy to be setting the stage for the future.''

. Valleynews.com staff determines what gets on the homepage, but virtually all submissions will find their way onto the site.

``Valleynews -- citizen journalism -- you can say whatever you want, the world will hear you,'' Daily News Editor Ron Kaye told curious parkgoers Sunday at the valleynews.com tent.

``Have you checked out valleynews.com? You can put up your own stories. The world will check it out. It's fantastic.

``This is the First Amendment,'' Kaye said. ``Freedom of the press for all.''

Articles posted before the official launch of the site included ``Latest 405 closures,'' ``Community pools a great place to cool off in Valley'' and ``Van Nuys Starbucks knows how to rock it.''

``I'm excited about exchanging ideas and information with my neighbors, my friends, my colleagues. If we did a little more talking, we might have less problems,'' said Gary Fitzgerald, 58, of West Hills.

``It's a great idea,'' Sal Gallegos, 54, of Sylmar said after registering on the site.

``Sometimes you have a photo that you want everyone to see,'' Gallegos said, with a digital camera dangling from his neck. ``Let's say there is something that happens every Sunday at a restaurant -- let's say there is a mariachi mariachi

, said Annie Hundley, editor of valleynews.com.

``We are so busy working and shopping for groceries and all that stuff that we don't have time to meet people,'' Hundley said. ``This is a way you can really home in on a part of your community and meet people.''

Expect to see Hundley writing columns about what it's like being new to the San Fernando Valley, about cool stories she's spotted on valleynews.com, and about her Chihuahua, Pepi.

Sue Coleman, 45, of Calabasas plans to upload stories about her young sons' sports triumphs. ``It will be fun to put up, `We won!'''

Her only wish is that valleynews.com had been around a year ago, when she and her husband adopted their son Maxim, 6, from Russia.

``That would have been cool to post for all the neighbors,'' she said.

Scott Spooner, secretary for the Northridge Kiwanis Club, said the site would provide a good venue to promote Kiwanis events.
