RE: New Internet Software Captures "Snapshot" of Organizational Internet Use.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 9, 1996--TINWALD NETWORKING

Tinwald Networking Technologies announces "Internet SnapShot (TM)" to reveal Internet usage for business and network managers

Tinwald Networking Technologies today announced "Internet SnapShot," a unique Internet monitoring Analyzing traffic on the Internet. Monitoring is performed to determine packet volume for network configuration as well as to find out how employees are spending their time on the Internet. This is the first step in determining whether or not filtering should be added to the network.  tool to help managers and network administrators determine the effects of organizations' Internet use on employee productivity and local area network activity. Internet SnapShot analyzes commonly used Internet protocols Refers to all the standards that keep the Internet running. The foundation protocol is TCP/IP, which provides the basic communications mechanism as well as ways to copy files (FTP) and send e-mail (SMTP). , thereby providing a "snapshot" of Internet usage. The product will sell for US$99, $139 Canadian. A fifteen minute evaluation version can be downloaded from Tinwald's World Wide Web site at www.tinwald.com.

Internet SnapShot will empower managers and network administrators in government, large and small business and education with a dynamic, Windows-based view of network activity. A user friendly network map presents each work station as a smart icon which changes colour when Internet activity takes place at the station. An overall view of system activity can also be displayed using pie charts and tables.

"Companies spend thousands of dollars getting on the Internet, but once the system is in place, it is very difficult to measure the value of the investment. Internet SnapShot demonstrates in quantitative terms how people are using the Internet, for how long, and the impact on local area network activity," said David Wright David Wright may refer to:
  • David Wright (baseball), (born 1982) American Major League Baseball player for the New York Mets
  • David McKee Wright (1869-1928) Irish born Australian poet and journalist
  • David Wright (artist), (1912-1967) British artist and illustrator
, Executive Vice President of Tinwald Networking Technologies.

Tinwald Networking Technologies has its roots in the development of network management and diagnostic solutions, creating hardware development and quality assurance tools for industry leading Original Equipment Manufacturers including Cisco, Bay Networks, Cabletron, and many others. Tinwald also markets the LinkView(TM) family of powerful, easy-to-use network diagnostic products. Internet Snapshot is the company's first application of its extensive network experience to the Internet.

Organizational Impact of the Internet While Internet use continues to grow exponentially in the business community, managers are just beginning to correlate the effect it is having on day to day business.

"As managers formally evaluate the role of the Internet they are looking for Looking for

tools to assist them; Internet SnapShot can help. Corporations may find that internal Internet use varies into ranges above, or below their estimations. We believe an understanding of who is using the Internet, and how, will help business increase productivity. Until now, there was no easy and affordable way to know," Wright added.

Internet SnapShot will also flag potential security risks to managers by revealing, for example, excessive use of Internet "File Transfer" protocols from an employee unauthorized to publicly distribute information.

Network Impact of the Internet

and Token Ring networks, the product enables network administrators/managers to see inside the network and determine which stations are running different Internet protocols, including HTTP HTTP

and Telnet, among many others. Local area network managers can also quickly see what percentage of network traffic is Internet related. Taking An Internet SnapShot

Internet SnapShot is an Internet monitoring tool that can run on any Windows-based local area network computer without disrupting network activity or decreasing network performance. While it is active, it decodes Internet protocols determining not only who is using the Internet, and for how long, but the type of protocol that client is running. That information is then summarized and displayed in pie charts depicting use of File Transfer, Remote Login (networking) remote login - A client-server program and protocol that provides an interactivel command line interface to a remote computer, using a protocol over a computer network, simulating a locally attached terminal. , Email, Web Browsing, Managing, News Reading, and Chatting protocols, and many more. A network topology See topology.  map presents computer-user names or aliases as a result of the time-saving utility which is included with the program. Internet SnapShot also displays the top ten users of Internet protocols in a tabular format to provide an excellent summary of how the Internet is being used in the organization, and by whom.

The Network Database, incorporated in Internet SnapShot, provides the network administrator with the option of recording pertinent information about each network station including station name, device type, location, etc.

System Requirements To be used efficiently, all computer software needs certain hardware components or other software resources to be present on a computer system. These pre-requisites are known as (computer) system requirements and are often used as a guideline as opposed to an absolute rule.  and Availability

Internet SnapShot is a Windows (3.0, 3.11, 95)-based software application. It works with any third party network Interface card that operates in promiscuous mode The condition in which a node in a network recognizes and accepts all packets regardless of protocol type or destination. If a computer is in promiscuous mode, it could mean it has been compromised.  with ODI drivers.

It supports Ethernet, Fast Ethenet, and Token Ring networks. The minimum system requirements are a 486 with 8 MB of RAM; local area networks with more than 50 stations will require a Pentium configuration with 16 MB of RAM.

Internet SnapShot will be available mid-August 1996 for an introductory price of US $99, $139 CDN (Content Delivery Network) A system of distributed content on a large intranet or the public Internet in which copies of content are replicated and cached throughout the network. .
