RCGA and CN Announce $1.7 Million Purse for 2006 CN Canadian Women's Open.

OAKVILLE, Ontario -- Increased prize money ranks top-10 on LPGA Tour

In a teleconference held earlier today, the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) and CN have announced that the purse for the 2006 CN Canadian Women's Open has been increased to $1.7 million (US).

The announcement marks a $400,000 jump from the $1.3 million awarded at the 2005 Canadian Women's Open and vaults the event into the top-10 for prize purses on the LPGA Tour.

"We are very excited to announce an increase to our purse that is sure to showcase the CN Canadian Women's Open as one of the premier events on the LPGA Tour," said Richard W. Desrochers, RCGA Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director, Championships Division. "In the short time since coming on board as our partner, CN has reinforced their commitment to the Canadian Women's Open and we look forward to delivering on what we hope will be our most successful Canadian Women's Open ever."

The 2006 CN Canadian Women's Open is scheduled for August 7-13 at the storied London Hunt and Country Club in London, Ont.

The increased purse builds on the momentum of last month's announcement of CN agreeing to a five-year sponsorship agreement (3 years + 2 year option) to become title sponsor of the Canadian Women's Open tournament, Canadian Women's Tour and Future Links program.

The winner's share of the $1.7 million purse for the 2006 CN Canadian Women's Open will be $255,000 (US), up from $195,000 in 2005.

Founded in 1885, the London Hunt and Country Club will play host to the LPGA Tour for the second time in 2006. In 1993 Americans Brandie Burton and Betsy King battled in a playoff, with Burton proving victorious. Canadian Dawn Coe-Jones finished third, only one shot back.
