RAYTHEON WINS $35 MILLION ARMY CONTRACT FOR SATELLITE TERMINALS
LEXINGTON, Mass. Nov. 12/prnEWSWIRE/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN)announced today that it has received a $35 million contract from the U.S. Army's Communications-Electronics Command to develop an extremely high frequency (EHF) tactical communications terminal for the Milstar satellite system.
"This award expands our solid position in the military satellite terminal business," said Walter H. Stowell, Raytheon senior vice president and general manager of the company's Equipment Division. "With it, we are now performing Milstar communications terminal work for the Army, Navy, and Air Force."
The new terminal is called the SMART-T, short for Secure Mobile Anti-jam Reliable Tactical Terminal. It will be mounted on the Army's standard high mobility vehicle (HMMWV) and will provide secure military communications routed through Milstar satellites.
The SMART-T is the first of a new generation of medium data-rate terminals, which will be able to relay more information than previously- developed low data-rate terminals. The new terminal will also extend the range of the Army's existing tactical communications system, called Mobile Subscriber Equipment.
Raytheon's 40-month contract calls for the company to deliver six SMART-T engineering and manufacturing development terminals. Raytheon will perform the work at its Equipment Division facilities in Marlborough, Sudbury, and Waltham, Mass.
Raytheon has previously developed, and is currently producing, Milstar communications terminals for both the Air Force and Navy.
The new Army award marks the third major satellite terminal win for Raytheon this year. In January, the company received an Air Force contract to develop a new, low-cost Milstar terminal. In February, the Navy awarded Raytheon the third year of a five-year production contract for the Navy EHF Satcom Program (NESP).
Raytheon, headquartered in Lexington, Mass., is a $9.3 billion diversified technology company with sales in four business segments: Electronics, Aircraft Products, Energy and Environmental, and Major Appliances.
