RAYTHEON UNIT COMPLETES WORLD'S LARGEST ALTERNATIVE REFRIGERANT PLANT FOR ICI

LEXINGTON, Mass. Dec. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Badger Company, a unit of Raytheon Company, (NYSE: RTN) has completed the world's largest alternative refrigerant plant for ICI Americas in St. Gabriel, La.
ICI announced on December 17 the successful start-up of the $100 million plant, four months ahead of schedule.
The plant will produce KLEA(R) 134a and have an initial capacity of 22 million pounds per year.
Over the course of the two-year project, Badger performed engineering, procurement, and construction work for ICI.
"This has been a spectacular project," said Frank Maslen, ICI business engineering manager. "We obtained our building permits in record time and finished design and construction extremely rapidly."
KLEA 134a, developed by ICI Americas' parent in the United Kingdom, is an ozone-benign substitute for chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs). The initial use for KLEA 134a will be as a replacement for CFC 12 in auto air conditioners.
ICI Americas Inc. is an indirect subsidiary of U.K.-based Imperial Chemical Industries. Badger has worked on 10 different projects for ICI in the United States and overseas to produce chemicals, petrochemicals, and plastics.
Raytheon Company, headquartered in Lexington, Mass., is a $9 billion diversified technology company with sales in four business segments: Electronics, Aircraft Products, Energy and Environmental, and Major Appliances.
