) has received a Marine Corps contract worth potentially $160 million dollars for the next generation Common Aviation Command and Control System (CAC2S CAC2S Common Aviation Command and Control System ).

CAC2S will provide a common set of hardware and software that will replace the Marine Corps' current Tactical Air Command Center The principal US Marine Corps air command and control agency from which air operations and air defense warning functions are directed. It is the senior agency of the US Marine air command and control system that serves as the operational command post of the aviation combat element , Tactical Air Operations Center The principal air control agency of the US Marine air command and control system responsible for airspace control and management. It provides real-time surveillance, direction, positive control, and navigational assistance for friendly aircraft. , Direct Air Support Center, Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, and Marine Air Traffic Control System functions. The system also incorporates new technologies for conducting combat identification and theater ballistic missile defense.

"This is an important award for Raytheon and our customer," said Dan Smith, vice president and general manager of Raytheon's Naval & Maritime Integrated Systems (N&MIS) business unit. "The CAC2S will provide joint interoperability and integrated systems capability for the Marine Corps with significantly reduced operating and total ownership costs."

Teamed with N&MIS on the contract are Motorola, Inc. (software development and communications); Sensis Corporation (sensor integration); Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (air defense software for threat evaluation and weapons analysis and weapons assignment); Gallium Software, Inc. (Human Machine Interface); and DHS DHS Department of Homeland Security (USA)

Smith noted that Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace was recently awarded a contract to provide launchers, missiles, and associated software for the Complementary Low Altitude Weapons System (CLAWS). "This connection will provide exceptional commonality between CAC2S and CLAWS," Smith said.

The first award is a Cost Plus Fixed Fee contract of just under $5 million for the program development risk reduction phase. Principal design activity will occur at N&MIS' Expeditionary Warfare Center in San Diego, Calif., and Raytheon's Command Control Communication and Information (C3I C3I Command, Control, Communications & Intelligence (US DoD)

) Systems business will provide production capability for CAC2S in Texas.
