RAYTHEON AWARDED $14.6 MILLION ADVANCED LASER RADAR CONTRACT
LEXINGTON, Mass., Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Air Force Materiel Command Wright Laboratory has awarded a $14.6 million contract to Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) for the development of advanced optical phased array radar technology for detecting, identifying, and tracking distant objects such as satellites and missiles.
With funding from the Strategic Defense Initiative Office (SDIO), the Air Force project will utilize laser, semiconductor processing, and microwave antenna technologies developed at Raytheon facilities in Tewksbury, Lexington, and Sudbury, Mass.
Raytheon, a pioneer in the development and production of phased array microwave radar systems, will apply liquid crystals to computer controlled electronic steering of a laser beam to produce a new class of optical radar components one-tenth the weight of current systems.
Under the terms of the 36-month Agile Beam Director (ABD) program, Raytheon will build prototype optical phased array steering modules and integrate them into three state-of-the-art telescopes for evaluation by the Air Force and SDI organizations.
Raytheon, headquartered in Lexington, Mass., is a diversified, $9.3 billion, international technology-based company with sales in four business segments: Electronics, Aviation, Energy and Environmental Services and Major Appliances.
