RAYTHEON ANNOUNCES SUCCESSFUL PATRIOT PAC-3 FLIGHT TEST
LEXINGTON, Mass., April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) today announced that the newly developed Patriot PAC-3 Multimode missile underwent a successful flight test on April 11 at the White Sands, N.M., missile range.
The completion of this first successful flight test elevates the Patriot missile system to a new performance level against advanced missile and aircraft threats.
A Patriot fire unit with a tactically integrated Multimode missile successfully engaged an unaugmented Beech Aircraft MQM-107D subscale drone. The target was detected and placed under track at sufficient range to intercept at 30 kilometers downrange at medium altitude.
At engagement, the Multimode missile was launched and successfully transitioned through the normal Patriot guidance modes. In the terminal mode, C-band track via missile semi-active and K-band active guidance operations were exercised, with intercept occurring under control of the active guidance mode. The active seeker's integrated fuze initiated the warhead and destroyed the target.
The new Multimode seeker gives Patriot higher firepower, improved performance against advanced aircraft and cruise missile targets, and expanded defended area coverage and higher altitude intercepts against tactical ballistic missiles.
William H. Swanson, Raytheon senior vice president and general manager of the company's Missile Systems Division, stated, "This successful test of the Patriot Multimode missile is a major milestone in the Patriot growth program. It is an important building block in the U.S. Army's program to continue to make Patriot 'all it can be' and expand its anti-tactical missile capabilities."
The Multimode seeker program, one of a number of proposed Patriot upgrades, is being accomplished under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the U.S. and Germany for extended air defense.
