RAW VALENCIA OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT.

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer

Tony Scalercio is used to dealing with a high level of talent. That's exactly what he expects to produce as the first-year coach of the Valencia High girls' soccer team.

The Vikings are just one of five teams Scalercio coaches. He's an assistant at The Master's College History

The Vikings aren't as experienced as many of the players Scalercio is used to dealing with, but he's encouraged by the hard-working enthusiastic group that continues to build chemistry as well as skill.

``What we've been working on is playing more of a possession-style game, controlling the ball and playing intelligent soccer,'' he said.

Valencia has 11 returning players, but most don't have extensive playing experience at the varsity level. The Vikings missed a penalty shot against the Rebels that could have won the match, but the tie marked the first time the Vikings hadn't lost to Quartz Hill in the four years the teams have played.

``Defense is probably our strongest point,'' Scalercio said.

``We're a fairly fast team,'' Scalercio said, ``especially up front.''

Senior Alicia Alexander and Heather Zubis return to form a solid 1-2 punch at forward.

``We hold the ball for possessions,'' Scalercio said. ``We're patient and try to create opportunities and follow through on them. One of our main focuses is controlling the ball. Controlling the ball is controlling the game. We're definitely a possession-style team.''

The Vikings expect to face their toughest opponents of the season when they participate in the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and Hart tournaments at the end of this month. They open Foothill League play Jan. 12 at Burroughs and are already looking forward to hosting defending league champion Hart on Jan. 29.
