RAUTH LEAVES HURTS BEHIND; H.-W. STAR A MULTI-THREAT.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Becky Rauth isn't sure what she has done more of: breaking records or breaking bones.

Rauth, of Harvard-Westlake High, is the three-time defending Mission League champion in the 300-meter low hurdles despite her health problems. She has broken both arms, a wrist, a leg and has been slowed by shin splints Shin Splints Definition

This season, Rauth has been healthy. It's probably no coincidence Coincidence is the noteworthy alignment of two or more events or circumstances without obvious causal connection. ``I've broken so many things but I'm not scared about falling,'' Rauth said. ``I already know what if feels like to break something so it makes me more aggressive.''

In addition to the 300 hurdles, the 5-foot-8 Rauth is also the school record holder in the 100, 200, 400, 100 hurdles, long jump and in the 400 and 1,600 relays. Competing in the maximum four events in every dual meet, Rauth helped Harvard-Westlake (10-0, 5-0) to its second consecutive Mission League dual meet title this spring as the Wolverines' leading point scorer.

``Over the course of the season, somebody who does eight events gives you incredible flexibility,'' Harvard-Westlake coach Jonas Koolsbergen said about Rauth. ``There has always been something to disrupt her season but it is hard to improve when you are already as good as she is. I definitely thought she could run faster than in the past but not as early in the season as she has.''

As a junior, Rauth finished second in the Southern Section Division III finals with a best of 44.01. She was limited to pool workouts until April because of shin splints she got from playing soccer.
